Syracuse Ice Hockey Goalie wins second consecutive CHA Goaltender of the Week award

After another strong week where she posted 84 saves, including 56 in an overtime loss, Syracuse ice hockey graduate student goaltender Allie Kelley was named College Hockey America Goaltender of the Week for a second consecutive week.

Kelley’s 56 saves in the Orange’s 2-1 overtime loss to Merrimack on Friday ended up one short of the school record but is currently the best single-same performance in the entire CHA this regular season.

After losing two games this weekend to Merrimack, the Orange will look to bounce back starting on Friday where they will host RPI for the first of a two-game series.

Syracuse Football Suffers Humiliating Loss to North Carolina

It was a marvelous start to the season for Syracuse football. For the second straight year, Dino Babers’ squad started off 4-0. The team looked dominant and appeared to be legitimately positioned to be one of the better teams in the ACC.

However, the last two weeks have been the complete opposite of the first four, with the Orange dropping its first game of the season against Clemson at home two Saturdays ago, and most recently getting throttled 40-7 at No. 14 North Carolina last Saturday.

Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye got all he wanted against Syracuse’s defense, throwing for 445 yards to go along with three touchdowns. The Orange surrendered 644 yards of total offense to the superior Tar Heels.

The bad news didn’t stop for the Orange on the football field however. Starting defensive lineman Denis Jaquez, Jr. is now out for the rest of the season. Jaquez becomes the third SU player (junior tight end Oronde Gadsden II and redshirt sophomore offensive lineman David Wohlabaugh, Jr. are the others) to be ruled out for the season.

Things won’t get any easier this weekend, as Syracuse heads to Tallahassee, FL to face No. 4 Florida State at 12 p.m. on Saturday.

Two Members of Syracuse Tennis advance to ITA Northeast Super Regionals

Ines Fonte and Polina Kozyreva of the Syracuse women’s tennis team qualified for the ITA Northeast Super Regionals on Sunday after going undefeated in both singles and doubles matches at the ITA Northeast Regionals.

Fonte, a senior, and Kozyreva, a graduate student, have both won every single one of their singles matches so far, as well as all their matches as a duo in doubles.

All Orange athletes who participated in the ITA Northeast Regionals won at least two matches in the singles games at the tournament on Sunday.

Before the ITA Northeast Super Regionals come around on Oct. 20, the team has one more event to play in, The Princeton Invitational which will take place in Princeton, New Jersey from Oct. 13-15.
