After an eight year hiatus, head coach Ian McIntyre and the Syracuse men’s soccer team are returning to the final four after  defeating the Vermont Catamounts 2-1 on Saturday.

In a game that was played in gusty winds and an onslaught of rain, both teams brought strong energy and effort. However, first half goals by midfielders Curt Calov and Nathan Opoku, and a clean game by goalie Russell Shealy propelled the squad to victory.

The team hasn’t lost a game in over two months, and will continue to fight its way to the first NCAA Championship in school history if they beat Creighton in the semi-finals.

The game will be played on Friday at 6 p.m. in Cary, North Carolina, the same place that ‘Cuse defeated Clemson for the ACC Championship last month.

Jim Boeheim and Dwayne “Pearl” Washington will be inducted in Ring of Honor

Longtime head coach of the men’s basketball team Jim Boeheim and former Orange basketball star Dwayne “Pearl” Washington will be the fifth and sixth members inducted to the Syracuse University Athletics Ring of Honor. The induction ceremony will take place on the same day the Orange host the Georgetown Hoyas.

Coach Boeheim, who has led the team now for 47 years, has brought immense success to the team during his tenure. During his time as coach, Syracuse basketball has appeared in five Final Fours, 34 seasons with 20-wins or more and one NCAA Championship.

Washington, who controlled point guard duties for Boeheim’s teams during the 1980s, led the team in assists and steals in all three seasons of his college career. After his junior year, Washington forwent his senior year and was drafted 13th by the New Jersey Nets in the 1986 NBA Draft. Washington tragically passed away in 2016 due to a brain tumor.

Men’s hoops get back on track against Notre Dame and Oakland

After a poor start to the year and recent horrendous performances against Bryant and No. 16 Illinois, Syracuse men’s basketball is now winners of two straight games. The squad defeated Notre Dame on Saturday on the road, and obliterated Oakland on Tuesday at the JMA Wireless Dome.

The two game win streak was led by seniors Jesse Edwards and Joseph Girard III who during this streak have accounted for a whopping 78 of the team’s 157 points.

Next up on the team’s plate is a matchup against Georgetown, who the Orange fell to last year after blowing a 10 point halftime lead.

Women’s hoops look to add wins to 6-2 record

After splitting their two previous games, head coach Felisha Legette-Jack and the Syracuse women’s basketball team look to add onto to their strong 6-2 record next week against some weaker opponents at home.

On Thursday, the team will face Coppin State who are currently losers of four straight games and five out of six. On Sunday, the Orange will play Wagner who, while currently standing at a decent 4-4 record, frequently play significantly weaker competition than other teams with the same record.

If victorious in their next two games, Syracuse basketball will have won eight of their first 10 games.
