No. 5 Syracuse women’s lacrosse took advantage of a 5-1 third-quarter run to to secure a 16-13 win over the No.7 Loyola Maryland Greyhounds.

The win is the fifth-straight for a Syracuse side that started the season 3-3. The match is also the sixth time the Orange face a team ranked in the top 10.

Graduate midfield Emma Tyrell led the way for the Orange with six goals, three of them in the third quarter. Senior attack Emma Ward added four goals and two assists to the total.

A dominant third quarter saw Syracuse limit their opponents to just one shot, while taking 10 themselves. Loyola delivered a better effort in the final period, but it was not enough to top the home side.

Syracuse returns to action on Saturday, against Louisville. Game is scheduled for 12 p.m.

Gerry McNamara leading candidate for head coaching job

According to multiple sources, Syracuse men’s basketball associate head coach Gerry McNamara has emerged as the top candidate for the Siena men’s basketball head coaching position. 

Multiple sources confirmed that McNamara visited Albany over the weekend to interview with Siena president Chuck Seifert and athletic director John D’Argenio.

McNamara played for the Orange from 2002-2006 and helped Syracuse win their only national title in men’s basketball history. He has spent the past 15 seasons on the Syracuse staff. McNamara was promoted to associate head coach under first-year head coach Adrian Autry this past year. 

Former men’s basketball player arrested on drug charges

Former Syracuse men’s basketball guard Brendan Paul was arrested earlier this week on drug charges. Paul is alleged to be a “mule” for rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs.

The former guard was arrested in Miami. A lawsuit described him as a “mule” for Combs, acquiring and distributing guns and drugs for the rapper.

Paul played two seasons for the Orange from 2018-2020.

Men’s lacrosse moves up to third in the polls 

Syracuse men’s lacrosse moved up in both major polls after a 2-0 week. The team beat Duke and Hobart to move them into third in both major polls. 

The Orange received 384 points in the USILA Coaches Poll, including one first-place vote to snag the number three spot. Syracuse’s opponent on Saturday, Notre Dame, is No. 1.

Syracuse are being ranked third in the USILA Coaches poll for the first time in over three years, and it’s just the first time the team has reached this rank during the season since February 2020.
