SU shuts Utah out for two quarters in win
The Orange outscore the Utes 6-0 in the second and third quarters during first-time meeting.
Syracuse men’s lacrosse continued the early season set of home games with an 18-7 win over the Utah Utes. After a disappointing end to their last match against Maryland, the Orange bounced back with two shutout quarters to secure the win.
Sophomore attacker Joey Spallina led the way for the Orange with a seven-point performance, leading all players with three goals and four assists. Fifth-year attacker Christian Mulé added four points, two goals and two assists, while sophomore attacker Finn Thomson contributed three goals and an assist.
Utah got out to an early lead courtesy of a Tyler Bradbury goal, and despite Syracuse taking the lead just two minutes later, Cody Hart kept the score tied at 2-2 halfway through the first quarter.
The competitive match would not last, as the Orange went 5-1 for the next six minutes. Five Syracuse players scored in the run to open up the game in their favor.
The Utes’ resolve would be once again tested in the second and third quarters, and they could not respond.
Joey and Jake Spallina combined for three of six goals and graduate goalie Will Mark saved 11 shots in the two periods to enter the final period with a 13-3 lead.
By the end of the third quarter, the game was all but decided, and the Orange closed out the game with a win.
The Orange home stand continues next Wednesday when the team faces Army at 6 p.m.
