The Syracuse field hockey team fell to No.3 North Carolina 4-1 at J.S. Coyne Stadium after the perennial powerhouse overcame the Orange’s early defensive intensity.

The stage was set for an intense and competitive matchup, with both teams carrying impressive records heading into the game. Anticipation was high following Syracuse’s record of 9-3 and UNC’s 10-2.

A solid start for SU saw resilient defense and swift counterattacks that kept the Tar Heels on their toes. The visitors’ remarkable precision in passing and relentless attacking mentality proved too much for the Orange, however, as the game would turn in UNC’s favor.

The first quarter was balanced in score as neither the Orange or Tar Heels could reach the back of the net. UNC’s goalkeeper made crucial saves, denying Syracuse several scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, Syracuse’s defense showcased impressive cohesion, stopping UNC’s attempts to break through.

The tension was rising, as each team was eager to gain the upper hand. The turning point came in the 19th minute when UNC managed to score on a penalty corner. Freshman Charly Bruder shot it in with assists from senior Romea Riccardo, and Syracuse alumna, Pleun Lammers.

However, SU would not immediately surrender. The Orange attacked the Tar Heels and earned two penalty corners and two shots on goal within the first minute of the second quarter. This would not translate to the home team breaking through, and North Carolina doubled the score after a penalty stroke.

Some 41 minutes into play, a strategic dribble crossing two Syracuse defenders in the circle had Ryleigh Heck sending a third ball into the net.

SU tried to rally with a third penalty corner in their hands but was unsuccessful. With about 10 minutes left, UNC secured the game ending goal.

The Orange received two penalty corners in the final minutes of the game but were unable to utilize these to their advantage. Luckily the home team would not be shut out, as senior back Eefke van den Nieuwenhof put Syracuse on the board in the game’s final moments. Still, UNC had already done their damage.
