Ex-SU and NFL wide receiver dies after accident
The former All Big East second-team player ranks among the top receivers in school history.
Former Syracuse University football player Mike Williams died Tuesday, two weeks after he sustained injuries in a construction accident.
Williams’ agent confirmed the death of the New York native at the age of 36. The ex-NFL wide receiver was left partially paralyzed as a result of the accident and was taken off life support by his loved ones, as reported by The Tampa Bay Times.
During his time with Syracuse from 2006-2009, Williams set receiving records and established himself among the all-time Orange greats. Williams is top 10 in career receiving yards and receptions; he is also tied for second place in receiving touchdowns. His 2007 season saw him get named to the All Big East second-team.
SU athletic director John Wildhack extended his sympathies on SU’s part to William’s family and loved ones.
“We’re saddened to learn of the tragic passing of former Syracuse student-athlete Mike Williams,” Wildhack said in a statement.
After his time in Syracuse, Williams was drafted in the fourth round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2010. As a rookie, he was named to the Pro Football Writers Association All-Rookie Team and was a finalist for both AP Offensive Rookie of the Year and the NFL Pepsi Rookie of the Year.
Williams went on to play for his hometown Buffalo Bills as well, before a short time with the Kansas City Chiefs. He finished his professional career with over 200 receptions and 3,000 receiving yards, for 26 touchdowns.
