Men’s lacrosse comes in at No. 9 in preseason poll
Sports SUmmary: Ex-Orange nears Super Bowl, women’s basketball ranked, ice hockey defenseman earns honor.
With the season less than two weeks away, Syracuse men’s lacrosse came ranked 9th on Inside Lacrosse’s Preseason media poll.
The Orange, who went 8-7 last season, will face eight teams who are ranked ahead of them in the poll throughout February, March and April, along with other ranked teams throughout the year.
The team will start its 2024 season with three games in week one, starting with Vermont on Feb. 3, Colgate on Feb. 5 and Manhattan on Feb. 9.
SU football alum heading to NFC Championship after huge performance
Former Syracuse Football player Ifeatu Melinfonwu and the Detroit Lions are heading to the NFC Championship for the first time since 1991 after defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-23 on Sunday.
Melinfonwu, in his third year in the NFL, tied for a team-best nine tackles in the win, matching his career high. He also had 1.5 sacks in the victory, becoming just the fourth Syracuse alum to achieve this in an NFL postseason game.
The Lions and Melinfonwu will look to advance to the team’s first-ever Super Bowl when they play the San Francisco 49ers at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Women’s basketball ranked in the USA Today Coaches Poll
SU women’s basketball earned a place in both the AP and USA Today/WBCA Coaches polls for the first time in the Legette-Jack era.
The honor follows a 2-0 week in which the Orange came back from an 18-point lead to beat No. 15 Florida State, before taking care of business at Pittsburgh.
The week also saw star graduate guard Dyaisha Fair earn both ACC Player of the Week and U.S. Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week honors.
Fair scored 31 points and a program-record 9 three-pointers to beat Florida State. She then went for a team-best 22 points on the road.
Weiss receives Defenseman of the Week award
Syracuse ice hockey defenseman Alexandra Weiss won the College Hockey America Defenseman of the Week award for her strong effort in Syracuse’s three-game week.
The graduate student went for a total of two points and five blocks against No. 10 St. Lawrence and Penn State on the week.
Weiss has 13 points on the year to go with 37 blocks.
The Orange next host Robert Morris on Friday and Saturday at Tennity Ice Pavillion. Games are scheduled for 6 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
