After falling just short on Sunday in Louisville, Syracuse women’s soccer was looking to build on that performance on Saturday afternoon at home. Instead, Pittsburgh produced a one-sided goal fest that saw five different Panthers hit the back of the net leading to a 6-0 win.

The Panthers posted 32 shots, an effort that is tied for fourth-most in Pitt women’s soccer history. The visitors put 17 shots on goal and racked up 11 corner kicks in an effort that saw them thoroughly dominate their rivals.

The Orange only managed five shots — four on goal — in their most lopsided defeat of the season.

Despite the heavy loss, Syracuse also made some history. Sophomore goalie Shea Vanderbosch made 11 saves in the loss and moved into second place in the record books for most saves in a season with 108. She has three opportunities left to surpass the record set by Katie Karlander in 2000 with 138 saves.

The Orange are now 2-11-2 overall and 0-6-1 in the ACC. SU’s last win came against Binghamton on Aug. 27.

Ellie Coffield got Pitt on the board early in the 16th minute with a top-corner strike that immediately put pressure on the Orange. Just five minutes later, the Panthers had an opportunity to double their lead with a penalty kick. Ashton Gordon struck the ball and was denied by Vanderbosch, who sprawled to her right and got a strong palm to the ball before eliminating any idea of a rebound.

The Panthers quickly pounced again as Samiah Phiri headed home a cross from Sarah Schupansky. The lead would be extended to three in the 33rd minute, courtesy of Amanda West.

Syracuse came out in the second half with plenty of work to do in what was an uphill battle to rescue a result from the match, but Schupansky shut down those thoughts as she found the back of the net for the Panthers’ fourth goal of the match.

Landy Mertz tacked on a goal of her own in the 61st minute before West found the back of the net again curling the ball into the top corner for her second goal of the game.

Syracuse is back in action at 7 p.m. Thursday when it travels to Raleigh to take on North Carolina State.
