Senior quarterback Garrett Shrader will not play in the Boca Raton Bowl this Thursday after undergoing surgery for a tear in his shoulder.

Syracuse announced he would miss the matchup after injuring his shoulder in October. The senior opted to postpone surgery until the season ended, but played a lesser role in games following his injury.

After a loss to Georgia Tech where he only played three snaps, Shrader returned to help SU reach a bowl game in the win over Wake Forest.

“There’s too many guys on this team that work too hard,” Shrader said after the Orange’s last win of the season. “I’m grateful for them and I wanted to send these guys out the right way.”

With Shrader out and an injury to backup Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, the team will have to play without either of its top two quarterbacks.

The Orange face South Florida in the game. Kick-off is at 8 p.m.

Three women’s lacrosse players named to top 50 list

Graduate keeper Delaney Sweitzer, senior attacker Emma Ward and graduate midfielder Emma Tyrrell were named to Inside Lacrosse’s Top 50 College Players list.

Sweitzer was ranked fifth on the list, and Ward was ranked in the top 20.

Four freshmen from the team were also named in IL’s Power 100 Rankings.

Alexa Vogelman tops the list for the Orange as the fifth-best freshman. Kaci Benoit came in at No. 12., while Ashlee Volpe got No. 21. Joely Caramelli was named to the watch list.

They highlight a team that will look to follow up on an 18-3 season that resulted in the second national semifinal trip for the program in the past three years.

Lacrosse legend to have jersey retired

Paul Gait’s no. 19 will join his brother Gary Gait’s and Mike Powell’s jerseys as the only three men’s lacrosse players to have their numbers retired by Syracuse University.

A ceremony will take place on April 20, at the JMA Dome, when Syracuse hosts the University of Virginia.

Gait led the Orange to three straight NCAA Division I National Championships from 1988-1990, two perfect seasons and a 51-5 record. He is also one of only 17 players to go over 200 points in the program, scoring 127 goals and 85 assists.

Among his other accomplishments, Gait was inducted into the USA and Canadian Lacrosse Halls of Fame, British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame and Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame. He was also included in the NCAA 25th Anniversary Team.

Gabriel Mikina keeps adding honors

Senior defender Gabriel Mikina was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America Third Team. Mikina has a 3.81 grade point average as part of his degree in Economics.

The honor recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for both on-field and classroom achievements.

Mikina was one of four players to start every game for Orange men’s soccer. He was part of a defensive team that kept seven clean sheets, while also contributing five goals of his own.
