Sports SUmmary: Men’s lacrosse wins first game of the year
Syracuse men’s lacrosse played their first game of the season on Saturday, defeating Vermont 7-5 at the JMA Wireless Dome. Five different players scored for the Orange, including two goals from sophomore midfielder Jackson Birtwistle.
Head Coach Gary Gait and company shutout Vermont in half of the quarters, and was able to find the net in all, but one quarter of the game.
Last season, the team went a measly 4-10; however, the outlook for this year is very bright, as the team received votes to be ranked as one of the Top-20 programs for the year by Inside Lacrosse. The season-opener victory over the Catamounts helps prove the critics right about this season being better than last year’s for the Orange, as Vermont had an impressive 12-7 record last season.
The squad has a busy weekend coming up, hosting University of Albany Friday night at 6 p.m., and also hosting Holy Cross on Sunday at 1 p.m. on Military Appreciation Night.
Women’s lacrosse duo chosen to ACC-All Preseason Team
Syracuse women’s lacrosse teammates and sisters, Meaghan Tyrrell and Emma Tyrrell were announced as a part of the ACC-All Preseason Team, voted on by the head coaches of the teams.
Meaghan Tyrell had a spectacular last season, finishing sixth in the nation in goals and seventh in the country in points. Emma Tyrell was a force for the Orange a year ago, recording a career-high 64 draw controls and scoring three or more goals in four different games.
The season kicks off for the No. 5 ranked team this Saturday against No. 4 Northwestern at 12 p.m. at the JMA Wireless Dome.
Syracuse women’s tennis stays undefeated
Syracuse women’s tennis are undefeated to start the year with a staggering 5-0 record after defeating Drexel 4-2 on Saturday.
The team has won every game by two points or more, and have held every team to two points or less in every match this year.
The team will look to keep a loss off their record when they face Buffalo Monday at 3 p.m. at the Drumlins Country Club in Syracuse.

Men’s basketball starts to get back on track
The end of January was all sorts of chaos for Syracuse men’s basketball. Head Coach Jim Boeheim was in the news for some of his responses to reporters, and the team had blown multiple second half leads and got obliterated by Virginia Tech.
However, ever since Punxsutawney Phil groundhog saw his shadow, the team is undefeated, going on the road and beating both Boston College and Florida State after being down in the second half in both games.
Senior center Jesse Edwards has continued to dominate, including a remarkable 27-point performance against Boston College that saw him shooting 80% from the field. Senior guard Joseph Girard III is averaging 22 points this month and is shooting a strong 6-for-14 from three during this two game winning streak.
Unlike what Punxsutawney Phil foresaw coming, so far it has been sunshine and rainbows for the team this month.
But, their next opponent No. 22 NC State has won 80% of their games since the calendar turned to 2023 and will try to give them anything but a good Valentine’s Day gift when they visit the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday.
Women’s hoops goes over .500 for the week
SU hoops defeated their first ranked opponent of the season on Thursday against No. 14 UNC.
Syracuse women’s basketball blew a second half lead this past week this time to Virginia Tech. However, on Sunday they got back on track, defeating Boston College 79-72.
The team picking up the win was definitely vital to helping them get back on track, but in order for them to pick up more wins, they will need to close games better than they have recently.
In their last three games before facing the Tar Heels, they have been outscored 130-93 in the second half, a staggering -37 point differential.
Next up, the Orange hit the road to face No. 10 Notre Dame who they previously lost to at the JMA Wireless Dome on January 15.
