In a battle between two northeast lacrosse powerhouses, No. 5 Syracuse Women fell to No. 9 Maryland 8-9 in double overtime fashion on Saturday.

In what was a defensive and cagey battle, the Terrapins earned their first victory at the JMA Wireless Dome since 2018.

After Maryland opened the game with a 3-1 advantage through one period of play, the Orange shut out the Terrapins in the second quarter, bringing a 4-3 lead into halftime courtesy of two goals in a span of a minute.

Maryland then took momentum back to begin the third, as a pair of Kori Edmonson scores tied the game at five apiece. The two teams then exchanged goal for goal in the fourth, leading to overtime.

While Orange graduate goalie Delaney Sweitzer saved 10-of-19 shots on her goal, a pair of penalties from the home defense in the extra frame proved to be too much to handle.

Fittingly, it was the third combination of Eloise Clevenger to Hannah Leubecker on the day that provided Maryland with a statement victory on the road.

Syracuse head coach Kayla Treanor said postgame that her team “didn’t make enough winning plays down the stretch when it mattered most to pull out the win.”

The Orange will try to regroup next weekend as they travel to another top-ten side in Notre Dame to open up conference play.

After playing three games in the span of a week, Syracuse will hope to use the next few days to reset before they get into the gauntlet of their schedule.

The match at Norte Dame is scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m.
