Syracuse women’s lacrosse conference struggles continued on Saturday, as No. 5 North Carolina showed no mercy in their 20-11 win over No. 15 Syracuse.

SU’s Emily Hawryschuk’s four-goal performance was not quite enough to stop the high-tempo UNC offense.

UNC wasted no time on showing why they are one of the top teams in the nation. The Tar Heels scored three goals in the first four minutes of the game. Syracuse responded as sophomore Emily Hawryschuk scored her 42nd goal of the season. Freshman Sam Swart scored her 30th, but at no time did the Orange lead in the game.

The Tar Heels pulled away in the second half scoring 12-goals, three of them coming off the stick of Kara Klages. Klages and Marie McCool both had the team leading five-goals.

“Today was tough, we had the time to prepare, and get ready. We thought we were focused, I thought we just came out flat,” Head Coach Garry Gait said.

The last regular-season conference win for the Orange dates back to April 15 2017, when they beat UNC 13-11 down at Chapel Hill.

“We’re just not getting it done this year under some of these tough games,” Coach Gait said on some of the nail-biting games that SU has played in. “Some of them have been close and we have had some opportunities.”

Upcoming Game

SU’s next attempt at a conference win will come against the No.2 Boston College Eagles, the top team in the ACC (5-0). The Eagles have not lost a game all season.
