Bomberry’s OT thriller claims ACC regular season LAX title
SU claims ACC regular season title
For the second consecutive year, Syracuse men’s lacrosse took home the ACC regular season title.
No. 7 Syracuse (7-4, 4-0 Atlantic Coast) completed the ACC sweep in dramatic fashion with a 13-12 overtime win over North Carolina (6-7, 0-3 Atlantic Coast.)
Filling the Leadership Role
Redshirt senior Matt Lane tallied what may have been the two biggest goals of the first half. The six-foot-six midfielder scored two quick goals, the second one giving the Orange a 3-2 lead early on in the contest.
Lane came into the game with two-goals on the season; the man-up role player’s contribution was praised by Syracuse coach John Desko.
“Today I thought he got it done,” Desko said on Lane’s performance. “Couple big goals, one off the invert, one off the man-up, he saw some more time in the second half. We wanted to keep him out there because he had the hot hand,” Desko said.
Overtime Magic
In the opening minutes of sudden death, Brendan Bomberry would seal the deal for the Orange. Bomberry put one past UNC netminder Alex Bassil off a quick feed from Brendan Curry, to lift Syracuse over the Tar Heels in what was almost a shocking upset for the Orange. Bomberry now has 18 goals on the season, certainly a major contribution for the Orange.
“It’s a great experience for us to fight through that (Being down by 3 with five-minutes to play) in overtime. It is a good game experience. All in all to come back and win the game, come out with a win is a good experience for all of us,” said Bomberry.
Dome is Home
The Orange will have the week to enjoy the win, until it hosts Navy next Saturday for the regular-season finale at the Dome. Faceoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. on the ACC Digital Network.
