Lacrosse teams start the season ranked

Sports SUmmary: Women’s basketball earns AP Top-25 Poll spot, football coaching squad coming together.

Syracuse vs University of Virginia Women's Lacrosse Game
Returning Orange players Savannah Sweitzer and Maddy Baxter celebrate a goal during last year’s match against Virginia.

Both Lacrosse Orange squads will walk into the 2024 season as top-10 programs according to USA Lacrosse Magazine.

The Orange women were ranked fifth, and the men ninth in the preseason poll.

The women’s team starts their season on Feb. 10, when they face the defending national champions and preseason best-ranked team Northwestern. They are scheduled to face 11 schools either ranked or considered for inclusion in the poll, including seven of the top 10.

The men’s squad kicks off on Feb. 3, when they will face Vermont. The Orange face nine teams in the poll, including the top three: Notre Dame, Duke, and Virginia.

Women’s basketball debuts in AP Top-25 Poll

Head coach Felisha Legette-Jack‘s squad earned the No. 25 spot in the Associated Press Top-25 Poll. The Orange received 56 points to reach the poll for the first time in the Legette-Jack-era.

The Orange’s 11-1 record, that includes a perfect 8-0 at home, marks the program’s best start since the 2017-18 campaign.

Syracuse was also named ESPN’s Team of the Week following an upset over Notre Dame on Dec. 31.

The Orange next faces North Carolina on the road, looking to start 2024 with more success. Tip-off is scheduled at 6 p.m.

Brown builds up his staff

Incoming football head coach Fran Brown has continued to fill up his staff of coaches for his debut season at Syracuse.

SU announced this week that ex-Texas A&M defensive coach Nick Williams would be joining Brown to coach the edge. Buffalo defensive coordinator Robert Wright will be co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Finally, the school announced Joe Schaefer as the defensive backs coach.

All three expressed excitement at joining the program and getting to work with Brown.

Expect Brown to continue adding to his squad these next few months as he revamps the program that finished this season with a 6-7 record and 45-point loss at the Boca Raton Bowl.
