After losing to No. 5 Colgate 5-2 in the team’s first game since the month long break began, the Orange (7-15-1) faced another tough matchup as they went up against No. 10 Cornell. Unfortunately for the Orange, they were unable to get back on track as the Big Red handed them another defeat.

Cornell got off to a fast start by scoring the opening goal just three minutes into the first period. Big Red defender Alexa Davis sent a tight breakout pass to teammate Kaitlin Jockims who buried the shot from the right face-off dot to put Cornell up 1-0.

A few minutes later, Cornell’s Claudia Yu nearly doubled her team’s lead on a breakaway chance, but Syracuse freshman Charlotte Hallett caught up to her and made a timely block on Yu’s shot to end the opportunity. The period came to an end with Cornell still in control of a one goal lead.

The second period proved to be an even better one for the Big Red. With just over 30 seconds into the period, Cornell’s Izzy Daniel capitalized on a 2-on-1 opportunity by flicking the puck past Syracuse goaltender Arielle DeSmet to increase the lead to 2-0.

Three minutes later, Cornell tacked on yet another goal thanks to a shot by the freshman defender Alyssa Regalado. The puck was blocked by DeSmet, but she couldn’t stop it completely and it rolled past her to give Cornell a comfortable 3-0 lead.

Things began looking better for the Orange after Cornell’s Grace Dwyer was called for interference six minutes into the period. The Orange almost made the most of the advantage as Tatum White rifled a shot past Cornell goaltender Belle Mende, but the referees reviewed the play and found that Syracuse was offsides, thereby nullifying the goal.

With four minutes left in the period, both teams got tacked with roughing penalties after a scrap broke out between Regalado and Syracuse’s Madison Primeau. Shoves were exchanged between the pair after Primeau took Delgado down along the boards. Both were sent to the box, and the eventful second period ended two minutes later.

The third period began with both teams getting some scoring chances, but a power play opportunity at the 14:38 mark for Cornell was all they needed to make it a 4-0 game. DeSmet stretched out to block a shot from Regalado, but could only watch as McKenna Van Gelder put the rebound into the net.

With a minute left in the period, Syracuse finally got on the board as Sarah Thompson scored the only goal of the night for the Orange. The goal came too late to spark a comeback, and the game soon ended with Cornell winning 4-1.

The loss extends two streaks for the Syracuse ice hockey team. They now have a six game losing streak, and they remain without a win in all 11 games they have played so far against ranked teams.

“We’ve got to build on the little things,” SU head coach Britni Smith said. “We need to get momentum from a blocked shot or a good drive on net, and focus on that.”

Fortunately for the Orange, it’ll be easier to build upon the little things against their next opponent, Lindenwood, a team they’ve already beaten twice this year. The Orange will hit the road to try and get their third win against Lindenwood on Friday at 8 p.m.
