Orange basketball continues to defend the Dome

SU women’s basketball continued a perfect start at home despite 25 turnovers.

Syracuse women’s basketball took down Boston College 71-64 Sunday night, improving to 12-2 on the season.

The Orange subdued a late comeback attempt by the Eagles in a mistake-filled game that – in all fairness – should have been over by the third quarter.

Here are three takeaways from the Orange’s victory:

Tons of turnovers

Fans of mistake-free basketball: beware.

In a contest with over 45 total turnovers by both teams, Syracuse was able to win despite the sloppy nature of the game.

Misplaced passes, poor ball security and fixable errors by SU kept Boston College in the contest early on. The Eagles scored 14 of their 22 first-half points off of turnovers by the Orange. The high tempo BC pushed to begin the game helped the Eagles jump out to an early lead.

While Syracuse seemed to mitigate points off turnovers in the second and third quarters, BC mounted a late comeback attempt thanks in part to SU’s seven fourth quarter turnovers. An 8-0 run with just over five minutes left in the game cut the once 20-point lead to only seven.

Despite the late-game sloppiness, Syracuse was able to overcome its 25 team turnovers, closing out the game with a multitude of free throws curtesy of graduate guard Dyaisha Fair

Sharpshooting Sophie

Freshman guard Sophie Burrows was a constant threat from deep, scoring a career-high 17 points, nine of which came from beyond the arc.

The freshman helped SU jump out to a quick second half lead.

Burrows was also crucial in the paint; an offensive rebound and layup with 1:17 left in the game put the Orange up by 10 and ultimately proved to be the dagger.

Rewarded for her solid play, the Aussie played a season-high 33 minutes, racking up eight rebounds and a steal to go along with her explosive offensive output.

Dome sweet Dome

With the win, Syracuse improves to 9-0 at home this season. The JMA Wireless Dome has proven to be a fortress for the Orange under second-year head coach Felisha Legette-Jack; in 27 home games, Jack has lost just three.

With seven more home games, all of which come against ACC opponents, SU will look to continue its strong form.

The Orange faithful proved to come to Syracuse’s aid tonight.

Boston College shot 7-15 from the free throw line; a dreary 47% and far lower than its season average of 67%. In such a sloppy game, capitalizing on easy buckets proved to be critical. Syracuse finished 19-22 from the charity stripe, taking advantage of BC’s indiscipline.

As much as the Orange would surely like to stay in the Dome, their next contest comes against Wake Forest on Thursday in Winston-Salem. Tip-off is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
