Syracuse cornerback Garrett Williams, linebacker Mikel Jones, and kicker Andre Szmyt received ACC Players of the Week awards for their efforts against Virginia on Saturday.

Williams produced two takeaways in Syracuse’s 22-20 victory over the Cavaliers. The senior cornerback forced and recovered a fumble in the second quarter before intercepting Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong in the third quarter. On the day, Williams had three solo tackles.ย 

Jones was named ACC linebacker of the week for the second straight week. Against Virginia, Jones led the team with nine tackles, while the rest of the players did not have more than five.

Szmyt was named specialist of the week after having a day against Virginia, which included making the game-winning field goal. He was a perfect 5-for-5, making kicks from 26, 28, 31, 32, and 40 yards. Szmyts’ field goals accounted for 16 of the Oranges’ 22 total points in the game.ย 

The Orange will be hosting Wagner (0-3) at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Syracuse women’s volleyball is on a roll

The Orange won their first ACC matchup against Boston College on September 21. Graduate student Polina Shemanova led the Orange against the Eagles with 16 kills, putting her as the second all-time career kills in program history, moving past Jennifer Murphy (1,605).

Syracuse won by a final score of 3-2.

The Orange were victorious against Duke University on Friday. Shemanova was heavily involved in this match, recording a double-double with 20 digs and 14 kills.

Junior right side hitter Naomi Franco also heavily contributed to the Orange victory, registering 12 total kills.

The Orange will go on a two-game road trip starting Friday at Wake Forest and then on Sunday at Virginia Tech.

Orange in the NFL

Syracuse football alumni and current Indianapolis Colt Zaire Franklin has been crushing it in the NFL. Franklin, a Colts team captain, achieved 12 tackles in his team’s win against Kansas City on Sunday. Franklin is one of 11 Orangemen currently in the NFL.
