Syracuse ice hockey earns Senior Day win over Stonehill
The Orange took the ice on Saturday against Stonehill in a Senior Day matchup.
“Tonight was a really good opportunity to celebrate the success of this entire group,” SU head coach Britni Smith said.
It was a special night for the Syracuse seniors, but especially for graduate student forward Marielle McHale, who got the Orange the first goal of the game early in the opening period.
A few minutes later, Syracuse’s Hannah Johnson had her shot deflected into the net by teammate Rayla Clemons to make the Syracuse lead 2-0 heading into the second period.
The next 20 minutes of play proved to be even better for the Orange. Senior defender Mae Batherson found the net on a power play goal 11 minutes into the period.
Four minutes later, freshman defender Charlotte Hallett sent a pass to teammate Sarah Thompson, who moved the puck up the ice and into the Stonehill net to make the game 4-0 at the start of the third period.
The Skyhawks tried to rally in the final period, but it was too late. Alexis Petford scored a few minutes into the period, and the goal was followed up by her teammate Paige Whaley’s shot past SU goaltender Arielle DeSmet to make it a 4-2 game.
Stonehill couldn’t muster any more good scoring opportunities after that, allowing Syracuse to end the regular season with a victory. Before this win, SU struggled with a four-game losing streak, losing conference matchups against Penn State and Mercyhurst.
The Orange’s next challenge is in the CHA Semifinals against a familiar face — Mercyhurst. The first game in what promises to be a grueling best of three series will begin Friday at 1 p.m. in Erie, Pennsylvania.
