After dropping the first game of the best of three series Friday, the College Hockey America defending champions Syracuse took to the ice once again to face the Lakers in a win or go home matchup Saturday.

Although they showed some promise at the end of the first game, the Orange could not muster any offense in this pivotal game, concluding their season in a lopsided defeat.

The two teams were evenly matched for the the early part of the first period, but Mercyhurst finally broke through thanks to defender Alexandria Weiss’ goal 12 minutes into the game.

With two minutes left in the first, the Lakers added to their total after Thea Johannson’s backhander deflected off the crossbar and into the net to put Mercyhurst up 2-0 heading into the second period.

The second period was not as hectic as it was in the first game, but still saw a couple of goals. Eleven minutes into the period, Mercyhurst took advantage of the power play as Sara Boucher found the back of the net to make it a 3-0 game.

Three minutes later, Lilliane Perault increased her team’s lead to four goals after slicing through the Syracuse defense and tapping the puck in off the pass from Sydney Wegner.

In the third period, Johansson notched her second goal of the night after outracing Syracuse defenders to the puck and putting it past Syracuse goaltender Arielle DeSmet.

With three minutes left in the game, Mercyhurst got their last goal as Grace Nelles ended a 1-on-1 with DeSmet by scoring a bar down goal.

It was a disappointing end to an postseason for the Orange. First year Syracuse head coach Britni Smith’s team finished the regular season with a 10-24-2 record after last season’s successful .578 record.

The game marked the last time both Lauren Bellefontaine and DeSmet would wear Syracuse jerseys on the ice, a pair of talented players that have left their names on several pages in the Orange record book.

Mercyhurst will face Penn State, who also went 2-0 in their semifinal match, on Saturday at a TBA time for the CHA Championship crown.
