Coronavirus Puts a Halt to the World of Sports
2020 Olympics to be held at later date
This morning, the International Olympic Committee announced that the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be postponed, at least until 2021 to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The only Olympic Games that have ever been canceled were in 1916, 1940 and 1944 due to World War I and II. The International Games are among the last of athletic events to cancel or delay due to the outbreak.
Elijah Hughes to test NBA waters
Syracuse forward Elijah Hughes has announced he will be entering the 2020 NBA Draft. The ACC lead-scorer plans to see how he fits in the draft, but has said he’s going to keep his options open to potentially come back to the Orange. Hughes has one year of eligibility remaining. As SU has other seniors or transfers who’ll still have eligibility post-COVID-19, the question remains if any of Hughes’ teammates will follow suit.

Coronavirus stopping sports worldwide
About a week ago, ESPN reported that Utah Jazz player Donovan Mitchell tested positive for the Coronavirus and the NBA suspended the season. In collegiate sports, the ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Big East, SEC, AAC and PAC-12 have all canceled their tournaments.
As the Orange were preparing to face No. 3 seed Louisville after defeating UNC, the announcement from the conference came, automatically declaring No. 1 Florida State as the tournament champion. Though disappointed, Syracuse Athletics agreed with the ACC’s decision and have suspended all athletic activities. “The indefinite suspension of intercollegiate athletics is a necessary action during this world heath pandemic,” said John Wildhack, Syracuse Director of Athletics. “The health and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches, staff, and everyone involved is the top priority.” Coach Boeheim has yet to comment.
Syracuse fans took to Twitter, saying that the Orange should have won since they were the last win of the tournament. The Syracuse Mets were set to begin their season on April 9, but may not, as Minor League Baseball have delayed the start of their 2020 season. “We will continue to monitor the developments and will announce additional information about the 2020 season at a later date,” said a MiLB News Release. The Syracuse Crunch’s season has been suspended indefinitely with regard to the health and safety of their fans, partners, players, and staff, the team said in a statement.
The MLB, NHL, and AHL have also suspended indefinitely and MLS has been suspended for 30 days.
