Syracuse Topples Daemen in 3-point Shootout
This season’s men’s basketball opener at the Carrier Dome gave Syracuse a 90-71 win over Daemen with an Orange veteran and a couple fresh faces earning the spotlight.
The exhibition game was a slow start for the Orange in finding a rhythm on second-chance shots, and in outside field goals almost exclusively from Elijah Hughes (5-7), Robert Braswell (3-4) and Joe Girard III (2-5). Hughes at one point tallied 17 points in 13 minutes, going 8-11 overall for 24 points on the night.
Braswell was no stranger to the basket as the sophomore forward went 6-7 from the field with 17 total points, three of those six coming from the outside wing. On defense, Braswell nabbed four rebounds, a block and a steal. His contributions to cleaning the glass helped Syracuse dominate the rebound totals 42-23. Syracuse committed 20 turnovers, a frightening majority coming from the Orange’s primary point guards Jalen Carey (3) and Brycen Goodine (5).
Syracuse returned to their classic 2-3 zone defense, unlike their recent trip to Italy where Boeheim chose to run some man-to-man. The zone, per usual, forced Daemen to shoot 3-pointers. They finished the night averaging 43.8 percent (14-32) from beyond the circle.
The Orange now look to Tuesday’s game against Carleton for another exhibition matchup in the Dome.
