Spring break is rapidly approaching, and while your tickets might be booked and your itineraries set, these last-minute items to throw in your suitcase will enhance your trip tenfold, and will have you thinking “how did I ever forget to pack this?”  Whether you choose to lay in the Cancun sun or pizza your way down a mountain in Utah, you’ve got to make sure you pack all the essentials.

For Those Hitting The Slopes

Earmuffs

Earmuffs are having a moment right now. Fuzzy pink fur protruding from someone’s head is not an unusual sight on the quad. Still, earmuffs are more than faux fur that keeps your ears warm. They are easy to pack, affordable (you can get a pair of earmuffs for less than $15) and can elevate any snow bunny outfit, whether you’re drinking an après-ski cocktail, walking around town, or even just hanging in the lodge.

Hand/Feet Warmers

Doubling up on socks and a pair of thick gloves doesn’t always do the trick, so throw a box of hand warmers in your bag, and when you’re sitting on the chairlift, tuck them into your gloves. Your fingers will thank you. Or if you take a midday hot cocoa break and warm up in the lodge, slip them into your boots, and during your next run, your feet will be on the beaches on Cabo while you’re shredding up that powder.

Lip Balm

Chapped lips are real on the slopes, and while that nice breeze on your face might feel refreshing, your lips will benefit from bringing Bliztex, Aquaphor, Vaseline or any other goopy substance that will hydrate them and make them feel extra luscious. Remember, even in cold temperatures, lip balm with SPF will protect you against UV ray exposure. Throw it in your pocket and you’re good to go.

Flask

Getting a drink on the slopes isn’t always affordable, and the lines can be long. A flask is the perfect way to skip standing in lines and can spice up any drink, whether spiked hot cocoa or a swig on the ski lift. Just remember, drink responsibly, you are propelling down the slopes, and too much booze can lead to a less-than-ideal skiing experience.

Moon Boots

You might have already heard that Moon Boots are making a comeback. For our winter travelers, these boots will steal the après-ski scene. Not only will you look good, but these boots will also keep you warm in any weather.

For Those Lying in the Sun

Cheap Sunglasses

Spring break is not the time to risk your favorite pair of expensive Raybans, so look no further than a quick trip to Amazon for an affordable and stylish pair of sunglasses. You will have no worries running into the ocean or diving into the pool. Pro tip: buy two pairs of glasses just in case one doesn’t make it back to the shore, or you misplaced them at the beach bar.

SPF

While the highest UV in Syracuse might be three on a good day, the sun does not play around in a tropical setting. Sunscreen is a must! There is no room for sun damage in 2023. Super Goop Play is perfect for sensitive skin, and it is also reef-safe. No matter where you go, protect your skin from the sun. If you want extra protection, bring some SPF chapstick, the last thing you want to think about is a bright red burn all over your body.

Tanning Drops

This brings us to the third item on our list. UV protection can mean you won’t tan as much as you planned. Luckily, tanning drops can fix that. You can use these drops for your face and body. All you have to do is mix 2 to 3 drops into your lotion and spread evenly. And for those venturing into colder weather, you won’t have to come back pale.

Crochet Sets

On Spring break, you’ll definitely see all things crochet: Crochet bags, hats, dresses and even swimsuits. Whether you make it or buy it, make sure you have a crochet piece for your tropical destination.

Hangover Remedies

Having fun in the sun can be dampened by a hangover, especially if you’re traveling somewhere and the drinking age is 18. Liquid IV or Emergen-C comes in little portable packets you can bring on the plane and will revive you after a day of drinking. Ensure you are hydrating with lots of water and taking breaks from being in the sun while drinking because the result can be an unhappy dehydrated hangover.

For Those Hanging at Home

Fuzzy Blanket

Elevate any movie marathon with a delicious fuzzy blanket. I know you might be thinking, “I have a million blankets already, how could I ever need more,” but there is nothing quite like the feeling of snuggling up under a new blanket and binging your favorite show. You don’t need to spend a lot to have maximum coziness, and you deserve to spoil yourself during your staycation.

Projector

Make your room into your at-home personal theater with a portable projector. Pairing it with that new fuzzy blanket creates the optimal at-home movie environment. All you need is a white sheet and a portable projector, and you’re set for a heavenly night. While a portable projector is on the more expensive side, watching a favorite film from the comfort of your own bed is priceless.

Matcha

Coffee is boring, and spring break is a time to try new things. Matcha is perfect for filling that role. This refreshing beverage is a true art to make, and you can get lost online for hours learning techniques to create the perfect cup. Matcha is perfect for experimenting with and can go into pastries and food, so you can whip up some matcha pancakes to go with your matcha tea! It also contains less caffeine than coffee, so it won’t disturb any napping plans you may have worked into your schedule.

Boozy Board/ Card Games

If you’re bored at home, looking for something fun today, turn your favorite classic board or card games into a drinking game! Uno, but make it drive every time Jason puts down an even number, or Monopoly but when Bradly gets sent to jail everyone has to drink. Being at home doesn’t have to be boring, and a boozy board game is a perfect way to hang out with your home friends.

For Anywhere

Apple Tag

With the upcoming spring break airport chaos, it’s better to be safe than sorry. The Apple tag lets you track whatever valuable item you don’t want to lose, and will help you easily locate your luggage at the baggage claim. They are also useful for keeping track of belongings if you are staying in a hotel room with multiple people. Everyone’s stuff can get mixed up and strewn about, and you don’t want to leave any valuables behind.

Digital Camera

Disposables are out, and digital is in. Spring breaks are full of photo ops, so why not get a digital camera? You can get used ones on eBay and Amazon, but the price varies.

Hand Sanitizer

If there is one thing the pandemic has taught us, it’s to keep hand sanitizer handy. With all the fun activities you have planned, you don’t want to get sick. Bring a travel-size Purell to avoid any unwanted germs.
