Moon Boots trend returns to earth

One small step for footwear, one giant step for 'Cuse fashion.
Published: February 6, 2023

Syracuse University’s spring semester is defined by hoards of Canada-Goose-wearing students and @BarstoolCuse videos of people slipping down the hill next to Ernie on their way to class. A huge part of campus culture at SU is braving the constant snow, ice and wind from January until April, and with that comes adapting fashion trends to accommodate the frigid climate.

Enter: the Moon Boot.

Celebs and influencers like Dua Lipa, Tracee Ellis Ross, Lily Rowland and Ashley Kaylen kicked off 2023 sporting the retro boots, each with their own spin on classic aprĂ©s-ski style. And with the spring semester in full-swing at SU, Moon Boots have landed on campus – the ideal college climate for ski-inspired fashion trends.

A brief history of Moon Boots

Inspired by the moon landing in 1969, shoe designer Giancarlo Zanatta created the original Moon Boots that same year. The fittingly-named “Icon” boots were a staple of 70’s fashion, later making a reappearance in the early 2000’s – Paris Hilton in her unforgettable pink tracksuit and (obviously pink) matching Moon Boots.

The boots’ unique yet contradictory silhouette gives off retro ’70s vibes while also looking distinctly futuristic. Seemingly impossible to style, the Icons have withstood the test of time, their strange design making any outfit look high-fashion. So much so that Moon Boots were showcased in the Louvre Museum in the early 2000s, styled in numerous runway shows, and partnered with luxury brands like Dior, Louis Vuitton, ChloĂ© and Chanel.

The astronaut-inspired footwear has been around for roughly half a century and the design hasn’t strayed far from the original. Moon Boot riffs off the O.G. Icon design, strategically creating an extremely identifiable brand image. Throughout the years, the biggest changes the company has made to the design include adding new colors and making the height of the boot shorter.

Out-of-this-world style

Channel Dua Lipa on your spring break and wear the boots with a matching bikini, or layer up for the 15-degree walk to class. The shockingly versatile footwear has the potential to elevate any outfit and test the bounds of fashion.
