The circus arrived Saturday in the Schine Underground. But rather than lions and trapeze artists, Syracuse University students set up a big top of high fashion.

The Fashion Association of Design Students (FADS) soldout show featured the works of 26 student designers, all inspired by this year’s show theme, “Night Circus.”

Throughout the evening, the audience was treated to a parade of red, black and white high fashion clearly inspired by circus performers. With dialogue spoken by the clown Pennywise from the 2017 movie adaptation of Stephen King’s thriller IT popping up between bars in the music, contortionists with dark eye makeup and the occasional red balloon, the show was both whimsical and chilling.

FADS president Aanya Singh said the theme was based on Erin Morganstern’s novel of the same title.

The show also featured two collections by guest designer Khang Le whose Khangle fashion brand is best known for a mix of high fashion and avant-garde looks.

When Le came out onto the stage to announce his collection, one lucky student designer, Calla Kremidas, got a surprise.

Le chose one of her designs, a red suit jacket with black lace sleeves, to wear while he introduced his designs.

“You have a beautiful future,” he said to Kremidas as he applauded her work.

“I was shocked when he came out wearing it,” Kremidas said. The freshman designer said it was an honor, especially since she had no design experience prior to coming to SU.

“She deserves to let everybody know this is her design,” Le said. “I had my garment for the show tonight, but when I see this jacket, I decided to wear it.”

Singh says she is looking forward to the future of FADS as she has witnessed its growth during her time as an e-board member.

“This club has now branched off into a non-fashion major thing,” Singh said. “The only thing that’s left is to make the club better.”

FADS is Syracuse University’s global fashion industry club for students with a passion for creativity, design and fashion. The club also allows models to perfect their craft by learning from other students currently working professionally as models and photographers, and it gives them a chance to build their portfolios with the club’s monthly photoshoots.

FADS will be hosting another fashion show at the end of the semester, although the date is still to be determined.
