Thievery Corporation brings world rhythms
The D.C. electronic musical collective incorporates reggae, Indian and Middle Eastern sounds into its live performances.
Syracuse music fans were treated to a sampling of music from across the globe Friday night when the acclaimed Thievery Corporation packed the Westcott Theater on its latest tour.
For nearly three decades, the Washington D.C. duo of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton have infused their electronica sound with a variety of styles from reggae to Middle Eastern to bassa nova to hip hop.
That blend made for an eclectic and electric live concert at Westcott featuring a revolving door of four distinct vocalists performing to the backing of sitar, percussion and rhythm section. The nearly two-hour set took place under the watchful eye of ringleader Garza who was situated centerstage in the DJ booth.
The New York City-based City of the Sun opened the evening with a 30-minute set of its Spanish-influenced guitar-driven instrumentals.
