UU hosts podcast series Emergency Intercom

Review: It was less “Emergency Intercom” and more “Emergency Exit.”

Drew Phillips, of Emergency Intercom, walks on stage clutching his pearls and bag. Phillips’ hat proved to be the most interesting thing about him during the night.

A motley crew sat in Goldstein Auditorium Thursday night to watch co-hosts Drew Phillips and Enya Umanzor of the internet comedy podcast, Emergency Intercom.

Originally billed as a night with both hosts, University Union announced two days prior to the event that Enya Umanzor was unable to attend.

Special guest Josh Ovalle took Umanzor’s place instead and was brought out a few minutes into the event after Phillips had talked alone for a bit.

Phillips suffered from a noticeable lack of energy throughout the night which he later later attributed to his poor sleep.

“On the flight from New York City to here I got like 30 minutes of sleep,” said Phillips. “And then we landed and I immediately came here.” Even with the addition of Ovalle, the event was largely a snooze-fest devoid of discussions with any real substance.

The vibe was less “live podcast” and more “mandatory meeting you can’t leave,” ironic given the show’s title. The duo began by talking about their Spotify wrapped, a topic which the audience was initially interested in, but which quickly lost momentum as both flailed to make jokes about their musical tastes and quickly turned to the audience to provide support for this segment.

From there, the conversation veered into the absurd. Phillips shared that he’d been “attacked by an owl”, declared he’s “leaving showering in 2024,” and described Syracuse Uber rides as unsettlingly odd.

Save for a handful of fleeting moments, their pointless drivel was brim with inside jokes – yet most missed one key aspect which could’ve clued audience members into the humor: being in on it.

The duo struggled to keep the fantasy of enjoyment up throughout the night and it became evident towards the end that their favorite thing about Syracuse is the plane ride out.
