This year provided us with a variety of new entertainment industry releases, ranging from record-breaking films and television series to new catchy albums. Among these, some of the most relevant of the past year have been Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Netflix’s series Wednesday, along with Beyoncé and Taylor Swift’s albums Renaissance and Midnights, respectively.

As we move into 2023 and say goodbye to last year, now is a perfect opportunity to look forward to what the entertainment industry has in store for us in 2023 and some of the most highly anticipated releases coming up soon.

Starting off the list, a new streaming series called Velma, is set to be released on Jan. 12 through HBO Max. The series will follow the titular character Velma Dinkley, well known for her appearances throughout the popular Scooby-Doo franchise and her adventures with the rest of the Mystery Inc. group before their official formation, serving as a prequel story to the main series. The series’ announcement sparked discussions online regarding the direction of the show and its characters, and as a result, the series will likely see a larger audience viewership.

Next, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, is planned to release in theaters starting April 7. A collaborative production between Illumination, Universal Pictures and Nintendo, the movie is a computer-animated adaptation of the long-running Super Mario Bros. video game franchise, and it will follow the titular character Mario. The film will feature an ensemble cast including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy and Jack Black, starring as Mario, Princess Peach and Bowser, respectively. With the massive success of the video game franchise, it is being adapted from, it is probable that the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie is expected to draw fans to the theaters.

On the music industry side, Sam Smith’s upcoming album, Gloria is set to release on Jan. 27. This will be the fourth studio album released by the English singer-songwriter, following their previous album “Love Goes,” released back in October 2020. The upcoming album’s release has been preceded by the singles “Love Me More” and “Unholy,” the latter of which has been a massively popular collaborative track with German music artist Kim Petras. Following the success of their previous three albums and newest singles, it is likely that Smith’s newest album Gloria will see similar popularity among audiences.

Last but certainly not least, Barbie, frequently referred to as the Barbie movie on social media, is planned to be released in theaters starting July 21. Directed and written by Greta Gerwig, the upcoming romantic comedy follows the story of Barbie and Ken while featuring an ensemble cast including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Kate McKinnon. The trailer has already amassed nearly two million views on YouTube in just 13 days, and positive fan reception and support for the film can be found all over social media.

Among these highlights and many more, 2023 is certainly another strong year for the upcoming entertainment industry and media releases. Only time will tell what other significant releases are in store for us this coming year.
