Second SU fraternity placed under interim suspension

Mere days after the university suspended Phi Kappa Psi due to hazing allegations, Psi Upsilon finds itself facing similar discipline.

Psi Upsilon has been placed under “interim suspension” amid allegations of hazing, according to a statement sent via email by Allen Groves, Syracuse’s Senior Vice President and Chief Student Experience Officer.

The news comes just under a week after the university placed Phi Kappa Psi under suspension following leaked hazing videos showing graphic behavior that Chancellor Kent Syverud then called “repugnant.”

“The reported behavior is degrading and has no place on our campus,” Groves said, classifying both this case and Phi Kappa Psi’s as “active investigations.”

Like the interim suspension for Phi Kappa Psi, Psi Upsilon is ordered to cease all activities until the investigations are complete.

“It is unfortunate that the actions depicted in these two cases undermine the positive contributions of our campus’ fraternity and sorority organizations,” Groves wrote in the statement sent to the campus community late Tuesday evening.

Psi Upsilon is prominently located on the Syracuse University campus, on top of a hill overlooking the Einhorn Family Walk promenade. The fraternity has existed at SU since 1875.

The fraternity previously faced controversy over a ‘Bootcamp’ tradition that the chapter apologized for in 2019.

The news of Psi Upsilon’s interim suspension continues a problematic trend of fraternities getting into trouble with university officials in recent years and now in recent days.

When reached for comment, Psi Upsilon’s national Executive Director, Thomas J Fox, told The NewsHouse that the office was just made aware of the interim suspension late Tuesday night and did not have an official comment at this time.

On-campus fraternity leaders have not yet responded to requests for comment. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
