The Syracuse Fire Department responded to a classroom fire at the Newhouse School on Thursday night that forced the evacuation of the complex around 8 p.m.

Syracuse Fire District Chief Matt Craner said that the fire occurred on the first floor of the Newhouse 1 building.

“The fire was extinguished relatively quickly once we found it, but fire creates a lot of smoke and that smoke travels especially through a big building like this,” Craner said. “A large portion of this operation was clearing smoke from the building and making sure it was safe for people to go back inside.”

Craner said the doorway to the classroom sustained minimal smoke damage.

“Thanks to the quick response of our guys, that limited the damage to that classroom,” he said.

All occupants of the Newhouse School were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported, Craner said.
