Former Yankee and Mets slugger Gary Sheffield decides to retire after 22 seasons in MLB.

According to ESPN, slugger Gary Sheffield who last played in the majors with the Mets in 2009, told the New York Post he called the Major League Baseball Players Association on Wednesday and officially retired.

Sheffield, a nine-time all-star, finishes his career with 509 homers and more than 1,600 RBIs. He is currently 24th on the all-time homerun list.

"I wanted to retire after I played for the Mets," Sheffield said, "now it's time to say goodbye."

Jorge Posada weighs pros and cons of return.

New York Yankees catcher said he's not sure if he'll return to baseball after this season, according to The Post-Standard.

Jorge Posada is entering his final year in a four-year $52.4 million contract. He said he wants to assess his condition before he decides if he wants to continue playing after this season.  Posada had surgery on his knee in November.

The 39-year-old said if he does decide to come back after this season, he'd like to stay with the Yankees.

The New York Yankees are now offering Cliff Lee a seven-year contract

 In a surge to grab pitching sensation Cliff Lee, the New York Yankees have bumped up their original offer to seven years, according to ESPN.

 The Yankees original offer to Lee was for six years and $140 million. This new offer is less than the average $23.3 million per year of the six-year offer.

Contract dispute between the two sides continues

Contract negotiations between the New York Yankees and Derek Jeter are at a standstill. According to a source close to the negotiations, the team is waiting for Jeter and his agent, Casey Close to "drink the reality potion," according to ESPN.

The Yankees contact the agent for pitcher Cliff Lee as soon as the free-agent negotiating period begins.

As soon as the Yankees’ season ended, General Manager Brian Cashman made it clear that New York’s priority would be pitching the offseason, according to ESPN. Keeping their word, on the first day of the free agency period, the Yankees contacted former Rangers’ pitcher Cliff Lee.

The New York Yankees ace CC Sabathia will have surgery on his right knee.

The Yankees almost made it back to the World Series but this year will have to watch at home, or from a hospital bed.  New York left-hander C.C. Sabathia will have arthroscopic surgery on Friday to correct a small meniscus tear in his right knee, according to ESPN.

The NY Yankees are preparing for their ALCS matchup against the Texas Rangers starting Friday night in Arlington, Texas. The Yankees, defending World Series Champions, will pitch their ace C.C. Sabathia in Game 1 against C.J. Wilson for the Rangers according to ESPN.

Starter was left out of the rotation in series against Minnesota.

The New York Yankees will re-insert A.J. Burnett into their rotation for the American League Championship series according to the team’s official website.

The right-hander was left out of the rotation for the American League Division series after struggling in the regular season. Burnett posted a 5.26 earned-run average while compiling a 10-15 record.

A gunmen took the lives of 11 soldiers and his own at Fort Hood in Texas.

According to CNN. com, Eleven people were killed and another 31 people were injured as a gunman opened fire on Fort Hood in Texas today.  There is a possibility that more than one shooter was involved in the tragedy.  Fort Hood is the United States Army's largest post.  The shootings occurred at the sports complex on the military grounds.  President Obama referred to the incident as "tragic"  and "a horrific outburst of violence".  Fort Hood is home to almost 40,000 soldiers,...
