Syracuse won't get FiOS as Verizon stops expansion

Verizon says its stopping its five-year project to build a high-speed fiber-optic network that allows it to compete with Time Warner. The Post-Standard is reporting the company will not expand its FiOS service into new areas, including the greater Syracuse community.

Gunmen kills eleven people at Fort Hood

A gunmen took the lives of 11 soldiers and his own at Fort Hood in Texas.

According to CNN. com, Eleven people were killed and another 31 people were injured as a gunman opened fire on Fort Hood in Texas today.  There is a possibility that more than one shooter was involved in the tragedy.  Fort Hood is the United States Army's largest post.  The shootings occurred at the sports complex on the military grounds.  President Obama referred to the incident as "tragic"  and "a horrific outburst of violence".  Fort Hood is home to almost 40,000 soldiers,...

New York Yankees win World Series

New York claims its 27th title

The Yankees beat the Phillies last night 7-3 to win the World Series.  Hideki Matsui received the World Series MVP for his 6 RBI performance last night. New York has won 27 World Series titles, the most in the majors, but hadn't won the Series since their 2000 campaign.  This is captain Derek Jeter's 5th championship.  Manager Joe Girardi has won as a player and now as a manager.

Home sales highest in two years

Sales of existing homes are at the highest level since 2007

Sales of existing homes in the United States rose to their highest level in two years, cnn.com reports. In September, sales of previously owned homes jumped 9.4%, with most of the sales going to first time buyers. First time buyers purchased roughly 45% of the new homes in the last year.

Even with all these homes being bought, prices are still down about 9% from where they were last year. A major reason for the drop in prices has been an influx of distressed properties, including foreclosures and...

Dow Jones closer to 10,000

The Dow Jones industrials are closing in on the 10,000 mark.

The Dow Jones has not been at 10,000 since Oct. 7, 2008, but that could change on Wednesday, according to USAToday.com.  Stocks are getting higher in part to strong earnings reports from Intel and JPMorgan Chase.

Obama and team discussing how many troops needed in Afghanistan

According to CNN President Barack Obama will begin discussing how many troops are needed in Afghanistan tomorrow with his security team.  General Stanley McChrystal, the lead commander in  Afghanistan, called for an additional 40,000 troops for the effort.  Conservatives are urging the president to move forward with this surge of troops.
