Burglars target four Westcott homes

While students were away on winter break, thefts plagued the off-campus neighborhood.

The Westcott neighborhood and nearby Euclid Avenue reported a total of four burglaries over a four day span during Syracuse University’s winter break, according to a report from The Syracuse Post-Standard’s Crime Database.

The break-ins targeted at least one Syracuse University student and occurred between Jan. 2 and 5, a period during which students had not yet returned to school. One of the burglaries occurred at a home on the 500-block of Euclid Avenue, while the other three were reported in the Westcott area: two on South Beech Street and one on Clarendon Street.

Greensky Bluegrass, a Michigan bluegrass quintet, fuses jam band-like influences into their unique style of newgrass music.

Greensky Bluegrass appears relaxed, almost listless, on stage. But the ear contradicts the eye as soon as their fingers pluck the first strings. In a show of careful craftsmanship, the youthful Michigan outfit served up a sonic smorgasbord Sunday evening at the Westcott Theater.

It was sun, fun, and culture at the Westcott Street Cultural Fair Sunday.

Culture, food, music and sun? Westcott managed to pack it all in Sunday as they celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Westcott Street Cultural Fair. 

The day began at noon with a parade march from the Westcott Community Center. Booths of food vendors, community advocates, artisans and more lined the business district of Westcott Street and leaked off onto connecting side streets. Six different stages were set up to feature more than 30 musical and cultural performances.

Great Big Sea draw a wave of diehards

Let’s get something out in the open right now: the accordion is sexy.  I thought so before last night’s performance of Canada’s Great Big Sea, and now I’m ready to challenge anyone who tells me otherwise.  It’s the one instrument that rock bands avoid, and the one instrument that can get people on the dance floor without any persuading.
