Turkey threatens to cut off supplies of electricity Tuesday morning to its neighboring country Syria. The Damascus regime found itself immense pressure from Turkish, Arab, North American, and European governments for its continuous deadly crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators.

Reports say hundreds dead, thousands injured

Rescue workers used shovels, heavy machinery and their bare hands to remove the rubble remaining from a 7.2 magnitude earthquake which hit Ercis, Turkey and Van, Turkey early Sunday morning, according to CNN.com.

Four journalists captured by forces in Libya arrived safely in Tunisia.

The families of four New York Times journalists who were captured last week by pro-government forces in Libya can rest easy this morning, according to CNN.

The government of Turkey intervened to oversee the release of the journalists, who have arrived safely in Tunisia.  They are currently staying in the Turkish embassy.

This spring, the new program will bring students to Turkey's largest city.

Syracuse University launches its eighth SU Abroad location this spring: in Istanbul, Turkey. 

The department will host an information session with the program’s director, Erika Wilkens-Sozen, at 4 p.m. today in 225 Eggers Hall.

The new center, docked on the waterfront campus of the private Bahçeşehir University, will offer classes that include European Union studies, film, engineering, religion and Middle Eastern studies. The program starts Feb. 1 with a seminar called “Istanbul, the City,” and runs through June 22.

An earthquake in southeastern Turkey collapsed homes killing 51 people and injuring 71.  The quake registered a 6.0 magnitude at the Turkish earthquake monitoring center.  Aftershocks registered magnitudes of up to 5.5, hours after the quake.  The quake struck in Elazig providence, and hit the village of Okular hit worse, according to Ozcan Yalcin, press secretary for the province's governor.

Plus, "The Hurt Locker" wins Best Picture and Turkey earthquake kills more than 50 people

A man was shot in the head while driving on East Genesee  St. last night.  Police later declared his death Syracuse's second homocide of 2010, according to The Post-Standard.  The first occurred in January 2010. 

The shooter was a man driving in another car that pulled up next to Vernel Hills, 27, and fired several shots.  Hills was taken to Upstate University Hospital. He died there later in the night.
