Following a warning after massive earthquakes, Indonesians were told to evacuate

Indonesian earthquakes set off a panic, and for residents thankfully not a Tsunami. Early this morning, two massive earthquakes with magnitudes ranging between 8.2 and 8.6 shook the coast of the Indonesian island Sumatra, setting off a tsunami watch for the Indian Ocean. According to CNN however, an expert said the location of the second quake reduced the possibility of a tsunami, which allowed the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center to be cancel it’s advisory.

Earthquake, subsequent tsunami more expensive than Katrina.

According to the Associated Press, the total cost of Japan's earthquake and tsunami is somewhere between $200 and $300 billion. The exact cost is not known yet but it will be the most costly disaster ever. This is due to the extensive damage to roads, houses, business and utilities across seven prefectures.

Previously, the title went to the 2005 Hurricane Katrina, which cost $125 billion to New Orleans region.

Senior Chelsea McElligatt calls home after the quake.

It was 2:30 a.m. in Skaneateles when Dorothy and Frank Duester received a call from their granddaughter, Chelsea McElligatt, according to The Post-Standard. It was 4:30 p.m. in Toyama, Japan when McElligatt experienced the moment of a lifetime -- an 8.9 earthquake that tore apart Japan. 

McElligatt is studying abroad as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student. This is the fourth earthquake she experienced since traveling to Japan in August.

Damage results in hundreds of casualties.

A tsunami followed by an 8.9-magnitude earthquake on the coast of Japan has devastated the cities in the northern part of the country today, according to The New York Times. It is likely to reach the West Coast of the United States and South America. 

The number of casualties has exceeded 200 in Sendai, the closest city to the epicenter, according to Japanese officials. The number is anticipated to increase.

Tsunami warning for Hawaii downgraded to advisory, little damage reported.

The tsunami caused in the aftermath of a giant earthquake that hit Japan did minimal damage to several islands in Hawaii, according to CNN. Waves of six to seven feet were reported on Maui, Hawaii's "big island," but little to no damage has been reported so far.

Over 300 people have been killed from an earthquake and the subsequent tsunami in in Indonesia.

At least 311 people have died in an earthquake off of Indonesia and the subsequent tsunami, according to CNN.  Another 410 people are still missing.

The major earthquake hit Indonesia last night

At least 103 people have been killed and 150 are still missing after an earthquake hit Indonesia Monday night. 

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Sumatra on Monday and triggered a tsunami, according to cnn.com 

The Indonesian Ministry of Health previously said that more than 300 people were missing, but that number later decreased.

Hancock Airport ranks 10th in on-time arrival performance according to a study released by the Brookings Institute today, reports syracuse.com.  The average time of delay in Syracuse was almost an hour according to the report, which was conducted over a 12-month period that ended in June.

Syracuse.com reports that Onondaga Community College enrollment is up by 14%.

According to Syracuse.com Onondaga Community College’s enrollment has reached a record of more than 12,000 students.   That is an increase of 14% over last year.
