Supreme Court Associate Justice John Paul Stevens announced his retirement this morning from the nation’s highest court of law. The New York Times reports that Stevens submitted his decision in a letter to President Barack Obama around 10:30 this morning.

Governor David Paterson and U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced today that Syracuse will receive $300,000 to crack down on drivers using cell phones.  The two appeared on the Syracuse University campus this afternoon to announce the measure.  The new program is being tested in both Syracuse and Hartford, Connecticut.  See the full story here.

Syracuse is taxing two closed Catholic church properties for the first time. The city's assessment review board has notified St. Peter Church and the Cathedral School this week they will be taxed for the 2010-11 fiscal year, the Post-Standard reports.

According to the Justice Department police arrested Norman Leboon, a resident of Philadelphia, for threatening to kill Rep. Eric Cantor and his family. Cantor is the number two Republican in the House of Representatives.  

While Cantor and his family were unharmed after the two-count complaint filed against Leboon, "The Department of Justice takes threats against government officials seriously, especially threats to kill or injure others," U.S. Attorney Michael Levy said.

After 14 months of passionate and exhaustive debate and negotiations, the health care bill finally passed the House of Representatives late Sunday night. President Obama will sign a $875 billion health care reform bill into law at the White House on Tuesday, according to CNN. The bill was passed with a 219-212 vote. All Republicans and some Democrats voted against it . The opponents of the bill aren't backing down. "I believe the will of the people is reflected sooner or later in the makeup of the government, " McCain said, according to the ABC news.

Several local contractors say the demolition of the building by Interstate 81 could be a nightmare. Contractors are scheduled to submit their bids today to demolish a building that has closed the highway for two weeks. One local contractor, Welch & Sons, says it will not be submitting a bid. 

“If a job starts bad, it’s going to end bad, and this one has started bad,” Charlie Welch, who owns the company, said. “Whoever gets that job, I say good luck to them.”

Arguably the greatest golfer in the world has finally crawled out of the bunker. Tiger Woods addressed a group of about 40 people today for about 13 and a half minutes. It was the first time he has appeared publicly since a car accident that occurred the morning after Thanksgiving.

According to ESPN, while friends and family members including his mother were in attendance, his wife, Elin, was not.

Plus, three people are dead after a plane crashes into a Palo Alto home, and Tiger Woods is breaking his silence on Friday.

A head-on collision on Route 11 in Hastings left a West Monroe man dead and two other people injured, said state police.

Thomas E. Holmquist Jr., 19, 790 county Route 11, was ejected from the passenger's seat of a truck and pronounced dead at the scene by police.

Asha L. Reichel, the driver of the truck, and Cory E. Dinant were taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. Their injuries are not life threatening, said state police.
