As Stephanie Miner takes office, community leaders expect her to do more to address the environment and development.

For a better and greener Syracuse, people expect the new mayor Stephanie Miner to make important decisions in projects related to sustainability and the environment during her term.

“I think the character of her leadership will be very different than the past few mayors,” said Deb Warner, vice president for public policy and government relations in Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce.

Democrat Stephanie Miner ended the historic race for Syracuse mayor Tuesday, becoming the first woman to be elected mayor in Syracuse’s history. Miner, a two-term common councilor, took 50.1 percent of the vote, according to The Post Standard. For Syracuse mayor-elect Stephanie Miner, Tuesday night was one dreams are made of.


"To all of you who convince girls to believe in themselves and believe in their dreams, I want to tell you that you have somebody who has profound thanks for that,”  Miner told a crowd of of supporters in her victory speech.


Miner won 50 percent of the vote, becoming the first woman mayor of the city.

Update: MSNBC.com is reporting that authorities want to question an associate of Richard Heene who claims to have discussed the balloon hoax with him through e-mails.

The gap between the rich and the poor is growing in the United States.

The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, the Post Standard reports. While household income has declined in all groups the middle and lower class have been hit the hardest. The reason for the widening gap is that those with lower incomes have been hit harder by layoffs.
