23-year-old beats Phillies to win the title of league's best pitcher

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw has been named the 2011 NL Cy Young award winner. According to sportingnews.com, the lefty received 27 of the 32 first place votes by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. "I'm extremely thankful and humbled by this award," he said.

Progress was made Wednesday during negotiation talks, providing a glimmer of hope for a full 82-game season

On day 118 turning into 119 of the NBA Lockout, negotiation talks finally yielded some progress. The two sides at battle, the league and the players union, emerged after a 15-hour meeting starting midday Wednesday going until 3 a.m. Thursday. The result? A possible labor deal by the weekend with the goal of restoring a full 82-game season.

New York wins 92-79, Anthony misses 12 shots.

Last night, Carmelo Anthony was limited to only 14 points off 6 of 18 shooting from the floor, according to ESPN. However, he did finish with seven rebounds and seven assists in a 92-79 win for the Knicks over the Hawks. In the seven games that Anthony has been with New York, the 14 points were his lowest in a Knickerbocker uniform.

New York Jets plan to bring back running back LaDainian Tomlinson next season.

According to ESPN and NFL sources, the New York Jets plan to bring back veteran running back LaDainian Tomlinson for the final year of his contract. Tomlinson turns 32 in June but the Jets want to continue to use the 3 RBs in their backfield (Tomlinson, Shonn Greene, and Joe Mcknight).

Syracuse lacrosse began its pursuit for a 12th national title with a 13-7 win over visiting Denver yesterday in front of more than 4,000 fans inside the Carrier Dome, according to The Post-Standard. The Orange dominated every facet of the contest, jumping out to a 6-2 first-quarter lead.

Denver Nuggets, New Jersey Nets reach tentative trade deal.

Last month, ESPN reported New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhovo said he was done chasing Carmelo Anthony. But today he reached a tentative trade agreement with the Denver Nuggets for Anthony. In a two-team trade, the Nuggets will receive Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, Troy Murphy, Ben Uzoh and four first-round draft picks.

Meredith, 72, led Dallas to consecutive NFL title games, then became a staple of Monday Night Football

Former Dallas Cowboys signal-caller and Monday Night Football broadcaster Don Meredith died on Sunday, according to ESPN.  Meredith died in Santa Fe after sustaining a brain hemorrhage, and falling into a coma.

Free agent Werth signs with the Washington Nationals, the Syracuse Chiefs Major League affiliate.

In a move that came as a shock to many in the baseball world, free agent outfielder Jayson Werth signed a seven-year, $126 million contract with the Washington Nationals, according to ESPN

Werth moves within the NL East division from the Philadelphia Phillies, where he helped the team win the 2008 World Series and four straight NL East titles. Last year he had an NL-high 46 doubles, 27 homers and 85 RBIs. 

The Nationals went 69-93 last year and have not had a winning record since 2003.
