Three out of four people who attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail in its entirety do not succeed. Somewhere along that trek — a 2,180-mile footpath that stretches through 14 states, an epic trail the equivalent of climbing Mt. Everest 16 times — they falter. Injury, illness, family, funds and a broken-down psyche may lead the hikers off course.

Other New York regions represented on businessweek.com's list

Syracuse ranks No. 10 on businessweek.com's list of the 20 best places for jobseekers to "start over."

The website notes Syracuse's 7.6-percent unemployment rate and projects that 20-percent of the city's employers will increase hiring in the year's fourth quarter.

Buffalo was No. 9 on the list, the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown area was No. 11, Rochester was No. 16 and the Albany-Schenectady-Troy area was No. 18.
