Zito is making a team-high $18.5 million this year for the NL West Division champs, but he'll be on the sidelines during the playoffs.

The San Francisco Giants begin its best-of-five National League Division Series against the wild-card Atlanta Braves without left-hander Barry Zito, according to The Associated Press.

Zito (9-14) was left off the team's playoff roster. He last lost to the San Diego Padres on Saturday when San Francisco had a chance to clinch the division title. He was taken out of the game after a season-low three innings and gave up consecutive bases-loaded walks in the first.

Much-maligned starter A.J. Burnett has not been named part of the New York Yankees' pitching rotation for the American League Division Series.

Syracuse junior forward Kris Joseph and sophomore point guard Brandon Triche are two of the 50 players named to the John R. Wooden Award preseason list, according to the Post-Standard.

Joseph won the Big East's Sixth-Man of the Year award last season, averaging 10.8 points per game. Triche started every game for the Orange as a freshman, averaging 8.1 points per game.

Syracuse loses 9-8 to Army in the opening round of the NCAA lacrosse playoffs Sunday in a dramatic double overtime.

They were a team on a mission. After winning back-to-back national titles, the Orange looked forward to their third in as many years. Syracuse lost to Army just once in fifteen games since 1984. As the second ranked team in the country, the Orange (13-1, 5-0) looked to have every advantage over the visiting fourteenth-ranked Black Knights.

And the Central New Yorkers prevailed in the end – but not those dressed in orange and white. Army upset Syracuse 9-8, just five seconds before the second overtime period expired.

A report in today's Syracuse Post-Standard reports that school officials, nurses, and doctors have been warned about the alarming increase of HIV in Onondaga County. Officials were concerned after at least ten new cases of HIV have been diagnosed in Onondaga County since last December.
