Country's admission could cost the organization millions
Palestine became the newest member of UNESCO on Monday in a move that now threatens a significant portion of its funding. Palestine was admitted in a vote, which required a two-thirds approval. The final voting stood at 107 to 14, with 52 abstentions.
The country was accepted into UNESCO despite opposition from the United States and several European countries
Palestine won a bid into UNESCO Wednesday, despite the opposition of several other countries including the United States. If it gains full membership, this will be a big step in toward a place in the United Nations.
