Six weeks after the shooting and death of teen Trayvon Martin, Zimmerman has been arrested and charged with second degree murder

George Zimmerman turned himself into the police Wednesday and is now being charged with second degree murder in the shooting of unarmed teen, Trayvon Martin.  According to ABC News, Zimmerman will appear in court this afternoon to ask a judge to be freed on bail.  However, legal experts say it is doubtful a judge will set a bond for him.

After the attempted rape of a local female Sunday, a South Carolina sheriff is encouraging women to get concealed weapons permits.

Investigators said 46-year-old Walter Monroe Lance of Spartanburg, South Carolina attacked a woman who was walking her dog in Milliken Park on Sunday afternoon, WYFF-4 reports. They said Lance choked the womanand demanded she take off her clothing at which point Lance attempted to rape the victim.

Many college graduates struggle with getting a job after they receive their diploma. Not having a job also hinders the ability to pay off student loans. MSNBC reports that college loan debt has become a bigger issue for families than credit card debt. President Barack Obama plans to help reduce the economic burden by making loans easier to pay off.

Researchers in Ghana have accomplished a trial vaccine against malaria for the first time

According to the World Health Organization, there are about 225 million cases of malaria every year, with almost 800,000 resulting in death, USA Today reports.  Most of those who suffer from the deadly disease are children. In Africa, one in five children die from malaria, including one every 30 seconds, the WHO reports.

Impact may cause tsunami in Hawaii.

A powerful earthquake has hit the east coast of Japan today, according to CNN. 

Hundreds are dead and hundreds more are missing after water up to 30 feet high rushed through towns, Japanese media said.

The Japanese broadcaster NHK showed video of wildfire in the city of Hakodate in northern Japan.

Buildings and homes are destroyed and towns are washed away in what CNN calls "the most powerful earthquake to hit Japan in at least 100 years."

Tycoon considers running for President.

Real-estate tycoon Donald Trump surprised the audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference by saying that if he ran for president in 2012 and won, “America will be respected again,” according to USA Today.

Trump will make his decision in June but for now he’s busy self-promoting.

“I’m well acquainted with winning,” he said. “That’s what the country needs now.”

District officials say the teacher who didn't intervene acted according to policy

A teacher at a Florida middle school acted appropriately after he did not intervene in an October fist-fight between two students in his class, according to district officials. The teacher, Donald Charbanneau, could not intervene unless he had taken a special training session, which he had not, according to The Post-Standard.

The rescuers in Chile have only 89 meters to go for the "Plan B" drill to break through the trapped chamber.

Rescuers in Chile are expected to break through the chamber where 33 miners are trapped by Saturday, according to CNN.

Chilean Mines Minister Laurence Golborne said today that the miners could be extracted from the collapsed San Jose mine anywhere between two to 10 days after the breakthrough.

LGBT characters are becoming more common in TV shows

Today, there is a new trend in America’s TV shows. They are becoming more “gay friendly.”

According to The New York Times, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) said the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) characters on U.S. television is increasing, with 58 regular LGBT roles this season.

America is a nation of religions. But, how much do Americans really know about them? Not a lot.

The Independent Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life conducted a survey on Americans’ religious knowledge. However, not many of them could answer questions, even of their own religion correctly.

Researchers called 3,400 Americans and asked each person 32 questions about different kinds of religion, mostly in the format of multiple choices. Averagely, people were only able to answer half out of all the questions right.
