Syracuse University hosted its annual Midnight Madness event Friday, effectively kicking off the 2011-12 seasons for the men's and women's basketball teams in an event that certainly didn't disappoint.

You can breathe now. The start of the college basketball year finally kicked off Friday night with Midnight Madness.

Syracuse University hosted the event at the Carrier Dome where both the men and women’s teams displayed their talents along with many past players. The highly anticipated night marked the first time the men's and women's teams took the floor since heartbreaking postseason losses last spring.

No. 1-seed Syracuse falls to West Region, lucks out with easiest path to Indy.

Syracuse was cheated.

That was the consensus when the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament bracket revealed Syracuse had dropped to the fourth one-seed behind ACC regular season and tournament champion Duke.

The 31st Big East men's basketball tournament will captivate fans for five days and 15 games before the champion is crowned Saturday night.

Syracuse is the top seed and Louisville is the defending champion; and that’s all we know for certain at this point.

After working for over six decades as a Syracuse Athletics usher, one of SU's most loyal fans reflects on life, cancer and Orange Pride.

Harry Tzivanii suffered an injury during World War II that left him with chronic back pain. Twenty years ago, the government told him he could no longer take the medication they were providing to help with the pain. And to top it all off, he found out that he had cancer.

And not just one type. Five.

That man has gone to work for 62 years with all of those problems. That man is a 20-year-old usher who has worked for Syracuse University athletics for more than six decades.

Okay, he’s actually 85, though all evidence points to the contrary.

Syracuse clinches a share of the Big East regular season title with a 95-77 thrashing of Villanova in front of a NCAA record crowd at the Carrier Dome.

On a day when the unexpected happened, the Syracuse basketball team performed as expected. The No. 1 and No. 2 teams in college basketball, Kansas and Kentucky, lost earlier in the day.  Even the U.S. four-man bobsled team slid into the upset parade, ending a 60-year drought by winning a gold medal  in Vancouver.

Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim saw his team fall behind 23-14 to the Villanova Wildcats (23-5, 12-4 Big East), and decide to roll his dice, looking to hit the lucky seven. His seven ‘starters,’ that is.

After giving up a 16-point second half lead, the Orange buckled down to hang onto its lead and end with a victory against arch-rival UConn.

With the No. 2 national ranking on the line and the extra anticipation of its first meeting with Connecticut since last year's historic six overtime game at Madison Square Garden, Syracuse found a way to fend off its Big East rival yet again in Wednesday's 72-67 nail-biter win at the Carrier Dome.

Rick Jackson led Syracuse with 15 points, while Kris Joseph and Wes Johnson had 14 and 13 respectively. Joseph and Johnson combined to make six straight free throws in the final 33 seconds to help seal the win for the Orange.

The Orange finished off its non-conference schedule on Wednesday night with a crucial midseason battle against the Memphis Tigers

After suffering its first loss of the season, the Orange pulled off a 74-57 win against the Memphis Tigers. Wes Johnson had a game high 19 points and 7 rebounds while Kris Joseph added 15 points and 7 rebounds for the number seven ranked Orange.

Powered by a 14-4 run to open the second half and strong frontcourt play, the Orange win 85-72.

It was not vintage Syracuse. The game was not clean. The team was not crisp.

Not even the possibility of a hangover or the taste of warmth in Tampa could spoil the perfect start to the season for the Cuse.

Sunday afternoon’s matchup with St. Francis of New York could have been a classic trap game for Syracuse after its big win over No. 11 Florida on Thursday. But not even the possibility of a hangover or the taste of warmth in Tampa could spoil the perfect start to the season for the Cuse.

Arinze Onuaku scored 10 of his team-high 14 points in the first half, and Wes Johnson opened the second half with back-to-back threes as the Orange overcame a slow start to defeat St. Francis 75-51 in the Carrier Dome.
