More than 70 students, from across nearly every SU school, gathered at the iSchool for the second annual MLB.com College Challenge.

It was 9 p.m. when sophomore Max Greenberg gathered with the rest of his group, Team Winston, in one of the computer labs in the School of Information Studies’ (iSchool) basement.

Greenberg, who studies information management and technology, thought the problem his challenge group needed to solve was what to do about the slow nature of a baseball game.

23-year-old beats Phillies to win the title of league's best pitcher

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw has been named the 2011 NL Cy Young award winner. According to sportingnews.com, the lefty received 27 of the 32 first place votes by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. "I'm extremely thankful and humbled by this award," he said.

After seven years, Frank McCourt divorces himself from the Los Angeles team

According to multiple sources, owner Frank McCourt reached an agreement with Major League Baseball on Tuesday night to sell the Los Angeles Dodgers, along with Dodger Stadium and the surrounding real estate, a decision that brings to end not only a six-month legal battle with baseball commissioner Bud Selig but also a seven and a half year ownership that was never embraced by the team's fan base.

Escape in last few innings to force Game Seven

David Freese hit a walk-off solo home run in the 11th inning as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Texas Rangers, 10-9, in Game Six of the World Series last night. The win forces a deciding Game Seven tonight in St. Louis at Busch Stadium. "You had to be here to believe it," Cardinals Manager Tony LaRussa said in an interview reported by ESPN.

Left fielder Carl Crawford is yet another star player to join Boston this off-season.

The busy off-season continues to be a theme for the Boston Red Sox. 

According to ESPN, outfielder Carl Crawford came to terms with Boston Wednesday night, less than a week after the team acquired first baseman Adrian Gonzalez in a trade with the San Diego Padres. Crawford is the first Red Sox player to be given a contract of seven years. The deal is worth $142 million, with an average annual value in excess of $20 million.

Contract dispute between the two sides continues

Contract negotiations between the New York Yankees and Derek Jeter are at a standstill. According to a source close to the negotiations, the team is waiting for Jeter and his agent, Casey Close to "drink the reality potion," according to ESPN.

Felix Hernandez drew plenty of support in this year's AL Cy Young Award balloting.

Felix Hernandez has won the AL Cy Young Award. 

According to ESPN, the Seattle Mariners ace was rewarded by voters on Thursday for his 2.27 ERA and 232 strikeouts, easily edging out David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays and CC Sabathia of the New York Yankees. Hernandez won the award despite a 13-12 record. The 13 wins is the fewest ever by a starting pitcher in a non-interrupted season to win the award.

Ron Gardenhire (American League) and Bud Black (National League) are the 2010 recipients of Major League Baseball's Manager of the Year award, according to BleacherReport.

San Francisco catcher and Texas closer win easily

Giants' catcher Buster Posey and Rangers' closer Neftali Feliz won Major League Baseball's (MLB) rookie of the year awards, according to ESPN.  The Baseball Writers' Association of America voted for Posey to win the National League (NL) award, and Feliz for the American Leage (AL).

Designated hitter David Ortiz is returning to the Boston Red Sox.

Less than 12 hours before Thursday's midnight deadline, the Red Sox announced that they will exercise the $12.5 million option on David Ortiz for next season.

According to ESPN, it is unclear whether there are additional contract discussions going on between Ortiz and Boston. Ortiz told WEEI.com earlier this week about wanting a long-term extension and not a one-year deal. He hit .270 with 32 homeruns and 102 RBIs this past season.
