War Memorial arena transformed from ice rink to horse ring
The Syracuse Invitational Sporthorse Tournament began this morning at the Oncenter Complex. According to The Post Standard, transforming the ice rink to a horse ring took 16 hours with 40 workers.
The transformation took place last Saturday night after the Syracuse Crunch hockey game. First, workers removed the hockey glass, bleachers and nets. The ice was then covered with compressed paper flooring and plastic to protect it from the horses.
As the horse racing season at the nation's oldest track comes to a close, here's how to get in on the last of the action.
Horse races have been run on Union Avenue in Saratoga County for 145 years. It is "the August place to be." New Yorkers love gambling and love their equines.
Walk through the front gates, take in the air of royalty (it is the sport of kings). The scent of thoroughbred is pungent, the anticipation of money is liberating.
