Opponents say many of the pardoned did not follow guidelines laid out in state's constitution
The Mississippi State Supreme Court has upheld 192 pardons granted by former Governor (R) Haley Barbour before he left office earlier this year. The state’s Attorney General (D) Jim Hood filed the challenge, arguing those pardoned did not follow the proper protocol as written in the state Constitution.

New York Governor David Paterson says the state can't afford $2.1 billion in school aid. The state was scheduled to start making payments to schools this Wednesday but is not legally required to pay them until June 1. Paterson says the state will have the money by then.
"Plummeting revenues and record deficits have once again forced me to take extraordinary cash-management actions in order to ensure the continued orderly operation of our government," Paterson said.

According to Syracuse.com, Governor David Paterson outlined his new plan to cut $3 billion from the current state budget. Local schools would likely receive the bulk of the budget cuts, as well as hospitals, nursing homes, and other social service organizations.

The Senate Finance Committee passes Baucus' healthcare bill 14-9
The New York Times reported that the Senate Finance Committee voted to approve Chairman Max Baucus’ $829 billion health care bill on Tuesday in a 14-9 vote. Maine Senator Olympia Snowe was the only Republican on the committee to vote in favor of the bill that would reshape the American healthcare system. It is the fifth version of the bill to be passed by a congressional committee.
