SU's football team looks to lean on its running attack to help spark the offense.

With the 2010 season just days away, Syracuse University's new offensive playcaller Nathaniel Hackett is clear about the offensive plan of attack: SU is going to run the ball.

“We want to be a tough team. We want to come out and say, ‘Hey, you’re going to have to play football. The old-school, let’s get down to it, Syracuse Orange, running-back U,’” said Hackett, SU's quarterbacks coach. “The greatest quarterbacks had an awesome run game.

"A lot of people have kind of gotten away from that, and I think it’s going to be fun to run the ball.”

The Orange gets a boost from news that running back Delone Carter is returning this fall.

Head football coach Doug Marrone delivered more than just a blueprint of the upcoming season Monday during Syracuse’s annual media day.

“I recently just learned that Delone Carter will be reinstated back into school,” Marrone said. “We expect him to be traveling tomorrow (Tuesday) and do not know exactly what time he will arrive.”

As long as SU’s leading rusher arrives before the Sept. 4 season opener vs. Akron, teammates and Orange fans should be happy to see the running back on the field.

After the annual spring football game, the Syracuse Orange look ready for the second year of the Marrone Era.

Ryan Nassib may have been the starting quarterback for Syracuse in the annual Spring Game, but he knows all too well that he isn’t guaranteed that spot come fall.

Nassib was named SU’s starter early last spring, but then Greg Paulus arrived forcing him into a backup role. This year he may be competing with sophomore Charley Loeb, who proved he is worthy of a look from head coach Doug Marrone and his staff after Saturday’s Spring Game.
