Drake

December 22, 2010 - 11:41am
As we join Block Party headliner Drake in waving bye-bye to 2010, take a look at the top moments and matters for the Syracuse music scene.

It's the time of year for massive amounts of lists and not even Syracuse is safe. We reached out to some of the movers and shakers in the campus music community to compile some of their own original year-end lists spanning a variety of topics. And, continuing in the spirit of last year, we here at Otto-Tune compiled our second annual year-end list of Syracuse music happenings. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Making Block Party history, headliner Drake performed at the Dome Friday for a record-breaking 9,500+.

Leading up to Block Party this week, campus was buzzing with several questions about the status of Drake’s voice. After canceling a show at University of Massachusetts-Lowell Wednesday due to a vocal problem, the Toronto native’s situation dominated conversations around campus.

But once Drake took the stage in the Carrier Dome, he wasted little time easing the audience’s concerns.

“The doctor told me to take three days off,” Drake said while sipping on some water. “But I couldn’t do that to my family at Syracuse.”

The Campus Consciousness Tour is offering students the opportunity to score free tickets through volunteer work for the Drake-headlined Block Party Concert on Friday.

Reverb's Campus Consciousness Tour is looking for volunteers for Friday's Block Party Concert headlined by Drake in exchange for free tickets to the event.

The volunteers are asked to participate in Reverb's efforts to educate and mobilize students regarding environmental awareness.

Friday will serve up SU's controversial new Mayfest, Euclid's beer-fueled gathering and the Block Party concert featuring N.E.R.D. and Drake.

First it was condoned, then forbidden.  Today, it returns in new form.

Mayfest is back this year with a few changes but students must mind their manners.

Spring’s biggest event is back, but will it be the same? Mayfest, typically a lively outside block party stretching across multiple streets, has a new home.

Walnut Park will be the central location for the day’s festivities. The park will be split into three sections: A free beer trailer for 21 and up, a concert stage offering live performances, and a free food station.

 But the event isn’t a free-for-all.

Plus, House Ethics panel says Rep. Rangel broke the rules and 100 year-old doctor continues to practice.

SU's University Union has book hip-hop star Drake for this year's Block Party. The Canadian artist will headline the annual Block Party on April 30th at the Carrier Dome.  Tickets for students will be $15, and $25 for non-students. Tickets will begin selling sometime in March at suathletics.com.

Opening for Drake will be another Canadian singer, K-os, and a New York City based group, Francis & the Lights. A fourth performer will be announced to fill the middle of the bill in the future, someone not involved in the "Home Away from Home" tour.

February 24, 2010 - 11:57pm
Before you react to the announcement, put Drake's SU date in perspective.

There are two days to annually mark in your calendar as a Syracuse University student who cares about music - the second Sunday in September (Juice Jam) and the last weekend in April (Block Party).

It's the end of the year and all anyone can talk about are the best albums of the year, but that's bunk, because so many individual great songs on mediocre albums get left out of the conversation. It's time to count down the top 10 songs of 2009 before the ball drops.

People aren't going to like my list, mostly because it doesn't inlclude any Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear or Girls. Sorry, go slobber over SPIN's list--which was predictable and incredibly obnoxious. My list isn't about album recognition. This list complies the top 10 songs that rocked my year from beginning to end. That's it--cut and dry.

[**NOTE** The List is not ranked in order of awesome-ness]

There was a lot of great music in 2009, but some bands didn't deserve the hype.

I loved 2009, and I’m going to continue to love 2009 because it’s been a great year for music. No one can deny that with so many strong acts  hitting their strides, like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Dirty Projectors and Phoenix. However, with the release of so much great music, there tends to be a lot of overhyped bands. The bothersome part however, is that some critics herald these bands as some of the best in...
