Marrone aims to keep recruits close to home

Four years and 28 players later Doug Marrone has brought a New York flavor back to Syracuse football, but there is still room to grow

It’s important to Doug Marrone. That much is clear.

When Marrone accepted the head-coaching job at Syracuse University four years ago, it was one of the first things he brought up during his inaugural press conference. On Wednesday night during the SU football national letter of intent signing day press conference the topic came up again.

“We are not changing our stance on how we feel about the state of New York,” Marrone said. “We have to be able to get the best players out of this state before we can go to another state and try to get one of their best players.”

Jones declares for NFL Draft

Chandler Jones will forgo his final year of eligibility and enter the NFL Draft.

After three years and 10.5 sacks, Syracuse defensive end Chandler Jones has decided to forgo his final year of eligibility at Syracuse University and enter the NFL draft. Jones, an All-Big East first team defender from Endicott, N.Y. played in seven games for the Orange this season and registered a team-high 4.5 sacks with 7.5 tackles for loss.

Jones made the announcement via his Twitter account at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

News and notes on Syracuse's Week 2 victory over Rhode Island.

-  My recap of Saturday’s game, which was previewed as a blowout in the making but turned into a hard-won 21-14 Orange victory over the Rhode Island Rams.

-  Attendance at the game was billed as 36,421, which seemed high considering the number of empty seats in the Carrier Dome.

The Orange start slow once again, but survive visiting Rhode Island to stay undefeated.

It wasn’t pretty, but SU’s football team held off the potential upset bid by the Rhode Island Rams with a pair of clutch interceptions by safety Phillip Thomas and a career day from quarterback Ryan Nassib. After the game, head coach Doug Marrone expressed frustration in the mistakes “pretty much everyone” on his team made, but still stressed the importance of the bigger picture.

Syracuse starts the 2011 regular season at home against Wake Forest, and Doug Marrone and company hope to open strong by shedding their woes at home.

Syracuse University’s first bowl win in nine years ushered in a new era for the Orange, or at least, fan hope it did. The win came in the inaugural after a controversial penalty helped SU hold on to beat Kansas State, earning them an 8-5 record, the program’s best finish since 2001.

Sales faces drug charges

SU football wide receiver Marcus Sales faces drug charges after police arrested him and his brother Friday.

With only 32 days until Syracuse's season opener against Wake Forest, the status of one of SU's top offensive weapons became very hazy Friday night. Police arrested Marcus Sales, one of three senior wideouts on the team, along with his brother on drug charges around 9:45 pm, according to Syracuse.com and police reports.
