Tops Friendly Markets raise $24,500 during 'Check out Hunger' campaign.

Tops Market's campaign to raise money for the CNY Food Bank, between Jan. 23 and Feb. 12, raised $24,500, according to The Post-Standard. Customers were asked to give $2, $3 or $5 donations with all proceeds going directly to the food bank. 

Customers also had the option of donating to the food bank during check out. 

The Food Bank of CNY will use the donations to distribute food through out several counties in Central New York.

Class of '60 alum makes largest donation in school's history.

Four weeks after Syracuse University received a $20 million grant to build its scholarship program, Cornell University in Ithaca is getting a monumental donation of its own.  And this one is four times as much.

Howard and Louise Phanstiel's donation is the second largest ever in school history.

After generating a campus buzz that culminated in a Friday afternoon party for 1,000 on the Quad, Syracuse University announced a $20 million donation that will create academic scholarhips for  middle class students.

The gift from SU alummus and trustee Howard Phanstiel and his wife, Louise, is the second largest donation the university has ever received from an individual, said Vice President of External Affairs Tom Walsh.

The scholarship, beginning in fall 2011, is open to all middle class students who engage in the community and demonstrate leadership.

Facebook, the movie, hits theaters today and the founder of the site Mark Zuckerberg gives back with a substantial donation to an urban school district

Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerber, donated $100 million to the Newark public school system, according to The New York Times.

'The Social Network' opened today in theaters. Reviewers rave of the wit, genious and general appeal of the movie and generally agree that the movie was able to capture the essence of who Zuckerberg really is. The movie chronicles a young Zuckerberg as a student in college and how he doesn't care much about money or girls. Instead, he just wants to do something that he finds cool.

SU's second-largest gift ever was officially announced today

Today Syracuse University will officially announce that former student, Howard Phanstiel and his wife Louise, will give the school $20 million in scholarship funds for middle-calss students. The donation will be the second-largest individual gift given to SU behind former Bristol-Meyers CO's chief executive officer hearty $28.8 million, according to The Post-Standard.

A donation has been given to upgrade the electronic bell system.

Bells at Downtown Syracuse's  City Hall will ring again, and may be operational as early as this Christmas. 

A donation made through the Syracuse rotary club will pay to upgrade the electronic bell system. The donor's name is being kept in the City Hall for now. The new bell system is expected to cost around $12,000, according to The Post-Standard

The antique device that used to exist is being replaced by a newer, digital model, according to Lonnie Bornstein, chief city electrician.

Children of alumni donate $15 million for a new law school building.

Building a new law school just became easier.

Three children of Syracuse University's College of Law alumni Robert Emmet Dineen (class of '24) and Carolyn Bareham Dineen (class of '32) pledged $15 million to SU for a new school in their parents' honor.
