We got Santa and an elf to ask SU what it wants for the holidays. Also: 10 ways college students can enjoy the holidays

For students, the holiday season can be very final. Many of us still need to finish three or four major assignments before we can go home and sleep for a hyperbolic length of time. After finals season is over, however, the holiday season can begin in earnest.

With that in mind, The NewsHouse has put together its list of the 10 things you need to do before the holiday season.

According to Walgreens it’s been Christmastime since mid-October. These two writers think this is stupid. In protest we held out on writing a holiday playlist so we could give the pilgrims our undivided attention. Well, the turkey’s been devoured and as I type, Scrooged is on TV –– Santa’s time has come. There will be some changes in this year's traditional Christmas tree lighting ceremony in downtown Syracuse.

There will be a few changes to the traditional Christmas tree lighting in Syracuse this holiday season.  City officials are implementing changes to the annual lighting in order to be more cost effective.  Last year's festivities cost  $12,000, but this year's changes will save more than $8,000, according to The Post-Standard.  The city's recipe for drastically cutting costs in simply using less fancy and special staging, lights and production.

A donation has been given to upgrade the electronic bell system.

Bells at Downtown Syracuse's  City Hall will ring again, and may be operational as early as this Christmas. 

A donation made through the Syracuse rotary club will pay to upgrade the electronic bell system. The donor's name is being kept in the City Hall for now. The new bell system is expected to cost around $12,000, according to The Post-Standard

The antique device that used to exist is being replaced by a newer, digital model, according to Lonnie Bornstein, chief city electrician.

Music probably isn't the first thing you think of when you hear Syracuse (it's probably not even one of the top five things you think of) That said, there's more going on than you'd imagine if you haven't been paying attention in 2009.  Presenting perhaps the first ever year-end music list specific to the 315...
