A local bakery finds a niche in Syracuse University's catering services with their varied cupcakes.

The smells of rising dough and vanilla hit you when you enter the small Cupcakes & Smiles bakery in Camillus. Rows of cupcakes piled high with frosting peek out of a glass display. The five flavors of the week are written in fluorescent green and blue on a board behind the counter.

But the kitchen in the back is more chaotic.

West Genesee School District freezes wages

No raises until end of 2011-2012 school year for teachers, administrators.

West Genesee School District teachers, teaching assistants and aides, administrators and school superintendents agreed to a wage freeze for the 2011-2012 school year to help close a daunting budget gap, The Post-Standard reports.

Of the district's 750 teachers, aides and administrators 650 already agreed to the pay freeze and the rest will soon follow, said Superintendent Christopher R. Brown in an interview with The Post-Standard.

Missing Camillus man found dead

The body of the 79-year-old Camillus hunter who went missing this weekend was discovered this morning.

The body of Robert Levett, 79, was discovered around 10 a.m.. According to CNY Central, Levett had disappeared this weekend, when he was hunting with his son in the Tug Hill region.

Levett had been missing since Saturday afternoon, when he didn't show up for a scheduled meetup with his son. 50 to 60 searchers, along with the State Police and Department of Environmental Conservation rangers searched for Levett throughout the weekend.

A Camillus native was sentenced to 23 years in prison for antifreeze killing

Cynthia Galens, a native of Camillus was convicted of manslaughter in September and could have faced up to 25 years in prison at her sentencing Wednesday in Ontario County, near Rochester.

Cynthia Galens a native of Camillus has been sentenced to 23 years in state prison for murdering her boyfriend by lacing a jug of margarita cocktails with antifreeze, according to The Post Standard.

The 52 year old woman said she was sorry for the pain she caused, according to The Post Standard.

Plus, a brawl at a youth basketball game suspends the league's season and the East Coast is once again hit hard by snow.

The Syracuse men's basketball team will play Connecticut tonight since their match led to the second-longest game in Division I history last March. The Orange won the Big East Tournament quarterfinal 127-117 in six overtimes. Syracuse's leading scorer, Jonny Flynn, gained national attention from the game and was the sixth pick in the NBA draft.

Imperfect church

The downturn in the economy has challenged houses of faith in Central New York.

Pastor Mark Ferry of West Genesee Hills Baptist Church in Camillus, N.Y., discusses how the economic decline has affected his congregation, the church activities, and the distribution of donated money. The church remains one of only a few in their area that can still afford to pay and keep a pastor.

“We actually ended behind budget $19,000 this year,” said Ferry. “We actually cut $17,000 out of the budget last year, so to see us $19,000 behind this year is significant.”
